HURWORTH PICNIC
ENJOYABLE DAY ON BEACH. The Carrington Road school held its annual picnic at Ngamotu beach last Tuesday. Although a cold wind blew many of the children enjoyed' a swim in. the sea. Dinner was arranged by the ladies’ committee on the tables in the shade of the trees. The children were well catered for, cases of pears and a tin of sweets being distributed among them. A treasure hunt for the smaller children caused much amusement, the ground marked out being coveted with children on their hands and knees digging for the treasures, which consisted of bags of peanuts. Many races were run and the prizewinners were: Girls and boys under six, June Webb 1, Laurie ‘ Cple 2, Marjorie Balsom 3; girls, seven and eight years, Dorothy Burkett 1, May Allan 2, Diana Farnham 3; boys, seven and eight years, Edwin Okey 1, William Cole 2, Keith Balsom 3; girls, nine and 10 years, Doreen Earp 1, Christine Browne 2; boys, nine and 10 years, Lance Adlam 1, Jack Gilbert 2, Trevor Gilbert 3; girls, 11 and 12 years, Irene Salisbury 1, Irene Balsom 2, Muriel Farmer 3; relay race, Muriel Farmer’s team 1, Earle Gilbert’s ! team 2; boys’ three-legged race, Trevor Okey and Earle Gilbert 1, Trevor Gilbert and Lance Adlam 2; girls’ three-legged race, Irene Balsom and Joyce Campbell 1, Irene Salisbury and Dorothy Farnham 2; kangaroo race, James Caldwell 1, Diana Farnham 2, Yolande Campbell 3; treasure hunt, Laurie Cole 1, Yolande Campbell 2; girls’ balloon race, Dorothy ; Farnham 1, Eunice Barrett 2, Muriel i Farmer 2; boys’ balloon- race: Trevor . Okey 1, Earle Gilbert 2, Monty Farnham ■ 3; girls’ sack race, Kathleen Burkett 1, , Irene Salisbury 2, Muriel Farmer 3; boys’ sack race, Trevor Okey 1, Earle ( Gilbert 2, Monty Farnham 3; girls’ ! egg and spoon race, Irene Salisbury 1, Eunice Barrett 2, Kathleen Burkett 3; boys’ egg and spoon race, Earle Gilbert 1, Barry Browne 2, Monty Farnham 3. The children were conveyed to the picnic in lorries owned by Messrs. H. | Farmer, T. Megan and R. Gilbert,
