GOOD QUALITY STOCK

CATTLE SHOW AT AUROA HORSES AND DAIRY COW CLASSES. JUDGES’ FAVOURABLE COMMENT. Excellent displays of milk cart horses, equal to any shown in Taranaki, and of dairy stock of both sexes of high quality were the features of the cattle show conducted by the Auroa branch of the Farmers’ Union on the school and hall grounds at Auroa on Saturday. Fine weather favoured the gathering, which was well attended, and the greatest interest was maintained in the judging of the entries, which numbered 100, despite the fact that this year’s show was not a combined one, as in the past. The organisation of the show and the response of farmers with entries from all parts of the district from Manaia to Opunake and up towards the mountain reflected credit upon the president (Mr. A. W. King), the secretary (Mr. H. Hartley) and those associated with them. Championship awards were: Bull, J. Muggeridge, Oeo Road; dairy cow, J. Phillips, Awatuna. The judge of the cattle classes was Mr. C. Clemow, Stratford. He stated that he was very pleased with the entries in the dairy classes, in which the animals were true to type. The aged cow section was an excellent one. He commented very favourably upon the bull calf which obtained . the first award in its class, stating that more would probably be heard .of . the calf in the future. The horses were judged by Mr. N.' Hannah, Hawera. The animals were of a good class, and he was pleased to see that the foals were of such a good average quality. The placed horses in both the spring cart classes were fine animals, particularly the winner of the light class. The yearlings also ' were good. The Auroa branch, of the Women’s Division undertook the catering for lunch and afternoon tea and ice cream. Results are:— Champion bull: J. Muggeridge (Oeo Road). Aged bull: J. Muggeridge 1, A. W. Good Conduct Rules. “I was in town on New Year’s Eve when the band was playing,” said Mr. C. H. Bowman, president of the Hawera Highland Pipe Band, at the annual meeting on Friday night. “Then a wellknown business man,” he continued, “remarked to me, T suppose the. bandsmen will all be drunk by morning.’ I was hurt by that, for actually it is against the rules of the band for a member to be found drunk on parade and any bandsmen intoxicated in uniform is instantly expelled. One or two have been. I wish the Press would take a little notice of that,” said Mr. Bowman in conclusion.

Band Subsidy. “The band' is doing such good work that I think due notice should be taken of its popularity in the town,” said Mr. W. G. Simpson, vice-president, at the annual meeting of the Hawera Highland Pipe Band on Friday, when claiming that the present subsidy of £lO given the band by the Hawera Borough Coun» cil could be increased. The band was in a good position now, he said, but the fact remained that a vast amount of good work was done by it, and on that ac- y count, the borough council could well afford to give a greater subsidy. SOLDIERS’ CLUB SERVICE. RECENT IMPROVEMENTS MADE. A report on the improvements made in the service given members who attend the Returned Soldiers’ Club at Hawera was favourably commented upon at the meeting of the executive committee of the South Taranaki Returned Soldiers’ Association held on Friday evening. The position of honorary members was given consideration, and it ’was decided that their subscription remain at 10s 6d per annum, and the secretary was instructed to encourage the enrolment of these people who had not seen active service. They are to be accorded all club privileges other than the right to vote at meetings. Subsidies on wages amounting to £9 5s were paid during the month. They represent total return to unemployed exservicemen of £2l 2s 6d.

Four additional pension cases were reported. Mr. R. McCay, formerly secretary to the association, was appointed deputychairman to hold office during the currency of the present financial year. .Those present were Messrs. M. R. Jones (chairman), R. McCay, J. Cran, M. C. Crighton, A. E. Stevens, M. J. Squire, W. James, F. Foden, A. M. Young, D. McCormick and S. R. Veitch (secretary). WAVERLEY PERSONALS. Birch are on a motoring holiday in the north. On Wednesday evening members of the Presbyterian girls’ auxiliary were entertained at the home of Mrs. J. Hughes.
