CINEMA PROGRAMME
“BLOSSOM TIME.” TAUBER’S GLORIOUS TENOR. Richard Tauber as Franz Schubert in “Blossom Time,” substantiates beyond contradiction his claim to be the leading tenor in the world to-day. It is probable. that never within 25 years has there been a voice of such glorious quality and astonishing flexibility. Yet, even more important for the person who cannot hear the world’s greatest performers in per Son, is'the fact that Tauber possesses not only a magnificent voice but a magnificent voice that will record true in tone. “Blossom Time,” in addition to being one of the most charming and excellently directed pictures exhibited at New Plymouth for a long time, is a masterpiece of the sound engineer. The tone and variations of Tauber’s voice are reproduced as near perfection as anything yet heard from the screen. Based upon a romantic and obviously fictional version of Schubert’s love story, “Blossom Time” is strong in plot and finely interpreted by both the caste and the -producer. With no small degree of skill the story has been kept subservient to the music—a selection of Franz Schubert’s greatest songs. There is no contrasting “Blossom Time" with the “musical extravagania” so beloved of the Hollywood studios t6-day. Its music is deathless music that will appeal to anyone who loves music at all,’ irrespective of its classification. No singer to-day is better fitted than Tauber to interpret the delicate sentiment and wistful passion of Schubert’s songs. Nor is the German tenor without histrionic ability. Not only does ‘he f sing Schubert superlatively well; he plays him well—as an actor.' Jane Baxter and Lester Matthews give excellent support, and the picture is rich in scenic sequences. 1 : Supported by an excellently chosen list of “shorts,” including a delightful colour cartoon, “Brave Tin Soldier,” the programme at Everybody’s Theatre which has been extended till Friday, is one that a lover of either good music or good film entertainment should on no account mixa.
