HARD COURT TOURNAMENT FIRST TWO ROUNDS DECIDED. M. DONNELLY’S NARROW ESCAPE. Attracting record entries, the Taranaki junior hard court tennis tournament was commenced at New Plymouth on Saturday, and excellent progress was made, the second rounds of all events being completed. More than 50 boys and 20 girls are taking part, the boys playing on the courts at the Nev/ Plymouth Boys’ High School arid Pukekura Park and the girls at Waiwaka. It is expected that the semi-finals and finals will be decided at the Pukekura,, Park and Waiwaka courts next Saturday. Defending his : singles title, M. P. Donnelly nearly met defeat at the hands of C. Taylor in the initial round. Donnelly started well and ran to 6—3, but his opponent took the next three games in a row for 6—6. Donnelly forged ahead to "—(> and appeared to have the match well in hand with match point, but Taylor staged a recovery and evened at eight. Donnelly won the odd game in 17. A surprise was sprung when C. Nodder, winner of the junior lawn tennis title at this year’s Taranaki championships and last year’s hard court runnerup, went under to M. Tamati in the third round. Tamati played bright tennis and accounted for Nodder 9—4. Attracting considerable interest, the match between B. Burrell and P. Gilmour in the girls’ singles provided a splendid set-to. Both played a steady game, but greater experience won the former the match. Defending her title, M. Lawrence had no difficulty in entering the third round. Details are:— Boys’ Singles.
