UP MT. EGMONT AT 75

ACHIEVEMENT OF WOMAN SOME ANXIETY FOR WELFARE. LATE ARRIVAL AT THE HOUSE. RETURN COMPLETED AT 12.30 A.M. Some anxiety for the welfare of Mrs. C. Mayhead, Stratford, aged 75, who set out to climb Mt. Egmont yesterday, was felt when she had not returned by nightfall. However, she was in no trouble, merely delayed by a somewhat more strenuous climb than she had expected, and eventually reached the Stratford mountain house early this morning safe and sound to eclipse the performance of Mrs. Chequer, Hawera, and gain the distinction of being the oldest woman to have climbed Mt. Egmont. Mrs. Mayhead left the mountain house at 7 a.m. yesterday with a party led by Mr. A. Nelson. She found the climbing more difficult than she had expected, but persevered in her intention, though progress was slower than had been hoped. When night had fallen and the party had not returned, Mr. J. Carryer, the custodian, set out to see what had happened. As the night advanced and nothing was heard of the party there were some fears that there might have been a minor accident, the fact that no-one had been sent for help suggesting that nothing particularly serious had occurred. However, all fears were set at rest when the climbers returned at 12.30 a.m. Mrs. Mayhead was apparently none the worse for her experience, though, of course, rather fatigued.
