DAILY NEWS PICNIC
VARIED PROGRAMME OF SPORTS. Fine weather, a hot sun, general happiness and a varied sports programme yesterday combined to make the Daily News annual picnic at the Qkato domain a great success. After the races were completed Mrs. T. C. List presented the prizes. Some fine racing was seep, the most exciting being the departmental relay. At the end of the third 100 yards Smither (commercial) had a lead of three or four yards from Ewart (literary). He increased this but he tired in the last 25 yards, when Ewart caught him and beat him to the tape. The 100 yards championship, which resulted in. a win for Smither, of the Hawera office, was also an excellent race. Results of the races werh as follows:— Thread-the-needle:—First heat: Sowry and Miss' Hedley 1, Boulton and Mrs. Boulton 2, Scott and Miss Miller 3. Second heat: Davison and Miss Russell 1, Rowan and Mrs. Rowan 2, McCauley and Miss Harvey 3. Final: McCauley and Miss Harvey 1, Davison and Miss Russell 2, Rowan and Mrs. Rowan 3. Women’s sack race:—First heat: Miss Christoffel 1, Miss M. Allen 2. Second heat: Miss Russell 1, Miss D. Quay 2. Third heat: Miss Miller 1, Miss S. Quay 2. First semi-final: Miss Miller 1, Miss Russell 2. Second Semi-final: Miss Allen 1, Miss D- Quay 2. Final: Miss Miller 1, Miss Allen 2. Men’s sack race:—First heat: Hetherington 1, Smither 2. Wheelbarrow race: Harvey and Miss Christoffel 1, Sowry and Miss Hedley 2, Lacey and Miss Charters 3. Three-legged race: Scott and Miss Miller 1, McCauley and Miss Christoffel 2, Bruce and D. Quay 3. “Lester” cigarette race: Rowan and Mrs. Rowan 1, White and Miss M. Allen 2, C. Allen and Miss S. Allen 3. Married men’s race: Harvey 1, Rowan 2, Smith 3. ; , Married women’s race: Mrs. Hodge 1, Mrs. Rowan 2, Mrs. Smith 3. Visiting women’s race: Miss Christoffel 1, Miss D. Quay 2, Miss S. Allen 3. _ Daily News 100 yards championship: Smither (Hawera office) 1, McCauley (New Plymouth office) 2, Ewart (New Plymouth office) 3. Nineteen started. Smither and McCauley led early, but Ewart was well back at 50 yards. In the last 25 yards McCauley and Ewart gamed on Smither. Smither kept the lead and won by three yards, with Ewart a yard behind McCauley. Single women's race: Miss D. Quay 1, Miss M. Allen 2, Miss Christoffel 3. Departmental relay: Readers’ room (Miss Allen, Brabyn, Davison, Ewart) 1, Commercial 2, Literary 3. ■ Tug-of-war: Night staff beat day staff by 2 pulls to 1. Children’s Races.
