CLARA OUT OF HACK CLASSWith few Hawera horses with immediate engagements, there was little galloping of’ interest on the Hawera tracks on Saturday morning. C. Jackson’s pair, Aga Khan and Diagatio, were given sbund pace work, both moving freely. Aga Khan is an acceptor for the Waikato meeting. Old dopey is working regularly again and looks in splendid condition to get ready for coming steeplechases. Autumh Leaf (Cole) mbved attractively in a gallop over half a mile with Arouse (Duncan), the pair doing the distance in 51s. J. Fryer’s team were all relegated to half-pace work. Carfex did’ strong pace-work, going in his usual attractive style Ruri has been working well and is to race at Rangitikei, where he is in on the minimum in the cup. Ingenuity was out doing steady exercise. A trip to the Ohinemuri meeting in contemplated, when she will be given an opportunity in the distance hack rt.ce. This mare is very well and with the right placing should score for her connections. . . , Golden Hair (Grylls) sprinted three furlongs in 37 l-ss. Friesland and Topthom were allotted easy work. Topthorn is beginning to shape up and will be ready for more carious work very shortly. Several horses recently raced are enjoying a short let-up. The.next meetings to engage the built of Hawera horses will be Marton and Feilding, with the majority being reserved for the latter fixture. Gibraltar is to be given an opportunity at jumping and another recruit is the Mercian King gelding Dombey, who hai some smart flat performances to hw credit. Both horses are to be schooled this week. Providing Dombey takes -kindly to the business, his pace should make him a useful proposition. Silver Wings, who had been showing her two-year-old brilliancy just prior to Opunake, was expected to run very prominently in her race but was not handled well, perhaps, as she might have been. The owner, Mr. Simpson, was disappointed, and the filly will probably be turned out for a protracted spell. One of the most popular wins at Opunake was that of St. Clara in the President's Handicap, the mare receiving a great ovation on returning to the bird cage. St. Clara, who has been a model of consistency during her racing, will in future do her racing in open company—her win at Opunake putting her out' of hack class. St. Clara has a record that will stand examining as out of 32 Starts she has been first, second oxthird bn 20 occasions. The mare is having an easy time at present and will not be required to race until the Manawatu meeting. Another popular win was that of Mr. W. O’Brien's mare Passing Fancy in the Trial Stakes. Mr. O'Brien had an exasperating run of luck with Passing Fancy's brother Sandlark, who got into all the trouble possible while in work.
