FITZROY’S ALARM EVENT

SUCCESS OF CLUB B TEAM FAST TIME DECIDES ISSUE. MILFORD TEAM NOT ELIGIBLE. Beating the selected teams from the powerful visiting clubs after convincing displays both in heat and final, a Fitzroy B team, making its first appearance in New Zealand championships, won the 4-man alarm championship for the Roslyn Silver Reel. The result would have been a tie between Fitzroy and Lyall Bay B had it not been for Fitzroy’s better water time. The Fitzroy A team won the Taranaki 4-man championship at Opunake a fortnight ago and both A and B teams were confident of high placings in the New Zealand event. The beltman of the B team, Voullaire, holds the Taranaki beltman’s championship. The four-man event demonstrates an alarm rescue with a minimum number of life-savers. One man acts as patient, the second as beltman, the fourth is linesman and the third acts as captain, reelman and resuscitator. The event was commenced at Fitzroy on Saturday but the two heats held were cancelled and the competition recommenced, at Ngamotu. In the first heat McFarlane for East End made the best time, beating Shanahan by two seconds. St. Clair was the snappier, however. Maranui B replaced Wank with Eversleigh, New Zealand champion beltman of two years ago, but the swimmer went well wide of his course. Voullaire, Burton and Cunningham had a tense struggle for time points in the next heat, Voullaire winning by 2 1- seconds. Florence did good work on the line and safely held Lyall Bay. Milne swam poorly for Old Boys, having been badly exhausted by the fouling of his line at Fitzroy earlier in the day. Lyall Bay B and Takapuna A were separated by the narrowest of margins in the next heat, Galbraith’s time being the fastest registered till then. Maranui A was handicapped by the loss of Claridge with an injured shoulder and an almost complete reorganisation of the team. W. J. Jarvis, New Zealand swimming champion, was third to reach the buoy but there was not so much scope for his easy gliding style with a belt trailing. . ■ ? Fitzroy A, winner of the Weston Cup Taranaki four-man championship, had a mishap as the beltman raced out, the reel being dropped to turn two or three somersaults. McLean was second to his buoy, Milford, previously disqualified owing to non-compliance with requirements regarding medallions, being easily first Eastern United, fourth to the buoy was first through good line work. The final was a tense struggle between four even teams, but Voullaire and Shanahan took the lead, and thrilled the crowd with a neck-and-neck race to the buoys. Drift swept , both a few yards off their course -but Voullaire went back to the buoy more strongly and won by 2- second. The general work of Lyall Bay was superior to St. Clair’s, however, and the final checking had to be repeated three times before Lyall Bay and Fitzroy could be separated. The competition was awarded to Fitzroy because of the 12s better swimming time. First Heat St. Clair B (C. Durand, D. Shanahan, C. Elliot, R. Geddes), time 4.26 2-5, 4 points 1 Patea (W. M.
