LEADER’S SCORE ONLY 72

OUTRIGHT WIN FOR PARK OLD BOYS’ WEAK DISPLAY. WILSON AND SPEDDING BOWLING. On A wicket that was not particularly dangerous Old Boys failed completely against the Western Park bowling. In its two innings the previous Saturday Park compiled 77 and 99 and the first innings total of Old Boys was 45, leaving the club 132 runs to make for victory. The score was 72. Old Boys had . the advantage in not playing the second innings on matting, a type of wicket suited to Park’s bowling, but with two men absent the team failed to profit by the advantage, Wilson, who kept a good length and bowled some deceptive balls, came out with the sterling average of three wickets for three runs. He bowled two overs. Spedding was again successful and in four and a-halfj overs repeatedly beat the batsmen to take three wickets for 17 runs. Richardson and Eggleton took no risks in the first two overs, both of which were maidens. ” They were content to block both bowlers, Parkinson, who was swinging from the leg, and G. Ewart, who made pace off the wicket. Eggleton mistimed One on the leg and Carroll took a good running catch. When Birch had added only two runs he lost Richardson who, hitting against an off-break, lifted the ball to cover. Birch was less comfortable than usual but was still adding to the score. He was driving well when, off Wilson’s fourth ball, he badly mistimed a cover drive, sending a fast catch to third man. Gilbert lifted one to cover, and Lash, Thomson and Stevens were clean bowled. Old Boys, with seven down for 50, was in a hopeless position. However, Medley produced some powerful pull shots that reached the boundary and Harris held his end up. Medley continued to hit hard. He was lucky when two catches went astray but he did not last long when Spedding was brought back again. After a weak display in which the batsmen blocked many balls that should have been hit hard, the Old Boys’ innings closed at 72. Messrs. A. RamshaW and C. A. Richmond were the umpires.
