1000 SCIENTISTS
BIG GATHERING AT MELBOURNE. AIM TO MAKE SCIENCE POPULAR. By Telegraph—Press Assn—Copyright. Rec. 9.25 p.m. Melbourne, Jan. 15. About 1000 scientists are now assembled at Melbourne for the congress organised by the Australian and New Zealand Association for the Advancement of Science which opens to-morrow. It will continue for a week. This is one of the most interesting events of the centenary programme. Tire society’s object is to make science popular. To this end many subjects of general interest have been included on the agenda. All papers and lectures are prepared by experts in their subject. The opening lecture on Wednesday night, “Unveiling Antarctica,” by Sir Douglas Mawson, is expected to tell a fascinating story of the part played by Australia and New Zealand in Antarctica exploration. On Thursday night Dr. P. Marshall, New Zealand, will lecture on volcanoes of the Pacific.
