HEAD-ON COLLISION
ARMS AND LEGS OF MAN BROKEN. CYCLE MEETS CAR AT HILL TOP. By Telegraph—Press Association. Auckland, Last Night. Serious injuries were suffered by two young motor-cyclists, George Walters and Ivan Stanley Walters, Newmarket, when the machine they were riding was involved in a head-on collision with a motor-car on the Paeroa-Pokena Road about four miles from Pokena to-night. George Walters, who was driving the machine, received fractures of both legs and both arms, head injuries, concussion and shock. Ivan Walters suffered internal and head injuries, concussion and shock. The two men are not related, although they both live with George Walters’ parents. The rider of the machine is an experienced motor-cyclist, having taken part in cinder track races at Auckland for two seasons. The driver of the car was Albert Claude Nicholson, sharemilker of Hauraki Plains. He had purchased the car, a used touring model, at Auckland during the day and was driving it home when the accident occurred. The motor-cyclists were travelling toward Auckland on their return from Gisborne. The two vehicles came upon each other at the brow of a rise. Before either vehicle had time to swerve to avoid the smash they collided head-on. The rider of the motor-cycle received the full force of the impact but the fact that the pillion rider was carrying a pack probably saved him from more serious injury. The injured men were brought to the Auckland Hospital. The driver of the car, who suffered a gash to one hand, was taken to the Thames Hospital for attention. His condition was not serious. Both vehicles were considerably damaged.
