A man who bought an old copy of Robertson’s History of Ancient Greece for Is at a second-hand shop at Auckland a few days ago was surprised to find on leaving the shop that the leaflet bore in faded ink the inscription: “Presented to the Rev. Samual Marsden by Simon Lord, Paramatta, N.S.W., July 4, 1813.” A subsequent investigation at the library revealed that Simon Lord was a well-known Sydney merchant who had chartered the ship Boyd on the illfated voyage which ended in the fire and massacre at Whangaroa Harbour. “Good sense and reason ought to be the umpire of all rules.” That inscription on a window in the old Provincial Council Chamber at Christchurch was pointed out to delegates to the conference of the Harbours Association of New Zealand, which opened in the building. Mr. Howard said that no more fitting injunction could be made to delegates at the outset of a conference.
