CHILDREN’S POOL
IMPROVING MUNICIPAL BATHS. COUNCIL AUTHORISES THE WORK. Improvements to the New Plymouth municipal swimming baths costing approximately £164 will be undertaken almost immediately. The Borough Council last night, following receipt of a favourable report from the inspector, Mr. R. Day, authorised expenditure for the erection of a new children’s swimming pool and the provision of new roofing for the men’s dressing sheds. Cr. P. E. Staintdn in moving authorisation of the expenditure explained that £l5O for improvements was already set aside in the estimates. The provision of a children’s pool would be a great convenience for both adult and children swimmers, he said, and would in all probability considerably increase revenue at the baths. The baths committee and representatives of the swimming clubs were fully in accordance with the view that the work was urgent. If the expenditure was authorised the children’s shallow water pool could be completed early this season. The question of roofing was also extremely urgent. It had been hoped to effect temporary repairs until the sheds could be moved to their permanent position parallel with the women’s dressing rooms, but an inspection of the roof had shown that repair was impossible. The iron could be fitted in such a way that it could be used again in the construction of the new sheds. Both works were rendered all the more important because big swimming fixtures were to be held at New Plymouth this year.
