FAREWELL FOR MR. CLELAND. TENNIS CLUB OPENS SEASON. ■ t There was a large apd representative gathering in the Kohuratahi Hall on Tuesday to farewell Mr. Rob Cleland, who is leaving the district to take up residence near Stratford. Dancing was enjoyed and items were contributed by the following; Mrs. McCutchan, Messrs. E. Hill, J. Lawrence, J. Law, R. Knox and G. Gower, songs; Mr. G. Stockwell, recitation. After supper, Mr. G. Gower, on behalf of .the residents of the district, presented Mr. Cleland with a handsome mantel chiming clock and a cheque, and wished him every success in his new sphere. Mr. H. S. Kirton on behalf of the tennis club,i of which Mr. Cleland was a foundation member, regretted Mr. Clealand's departure, but extended good wishes for the future. On behalf of the vestry of the East Road Anglican Church, Mr. Kirton said that they were losing a valuable and energetic member, but could only hope that their loss would be another church’s gain.

Mr., J. Ostler, vice-president of the branch of the Farmers’ Union, of which Mr. Cleland has been secretary, said that Mr. Cleland had done much to further the interests of the branch and would leave the position of secretary a hard one to fill. Mr. Cleland, in expressing appreciation for the presentation made to him, said he regretted leaving the many friends lie had in the district, but he Would, however, not be severing his connections altogether, Mr. N. R.. Cleland, on behalf of Mrs. Cleland and himself feelingly thanked those present for the honour they had bestowed pn their son. Music for the dancing was supplied by Mrs. Connor, piano, Mr. O’Dea saxar phone, and Mr. J. Stockwell, comet. Extras were played by Mrs. G. E. Stockwell. Mr.’R. Hill was master of ceremonies.

In glorious weather the Kohuratahi Tennis Club held its opening-day on Thursday of last week, a large number of players being present, including visitors from the Whangamomona and Tangarakau and Tahora clubs. Mr. J. D. Law, president, wished the club a successful season, and complimented the committee on the condition of the courts. Mr. N. R. Cleland, in declaring the courts open for the season, congratulated the club on the anticipated large increase in membershipMiss V. Mclndoe, New Plymouth, is the guest of Mrs. J. E. O'Kane. Mrs. B. S. Corbett, Wharehuia, is spending a few days with her mother. Mrs., J. A. Nairn. Miss B. Pope is spending a short holiday with her parents.
