MR. W. STEWART APPOINTED. The appointment of Mr. W. Stewart, Crown Lands Commissioner and Chief Surveyor, Christchurch, to be • ValuerGeneral in succession to Mr. T. Brook,’ who retired recently on superannuation, has been made by the Public Service Commissioner. ■ , . > - ? Mr. Stewart was bom in 1881 and commenced K work dn the Public Service in the Wellington district as a draughts-;: man. and survey cadet in 1899. He subsequently qualified as a surveyor and carried out his field work , in that capacity mostly in the Wellington district. He was one of the most prominent officers of the Lands Department concerned in the administration of .help to' the Raetihi settlers who suffered severely in the extensive bush fires which swept the centre of the North Island in 1918. Special loans were granted and other assistance rendered to enable the settlers to restore pastures and resume farming operations. In 1923 Mr. Stewart was appointed chief draughtsman in the Christchurch Lands Office, and he was promoted to be Commissioner and Chief Surveyor of Crown Lands, Christchurch, in January, 1926.
