Much-needed’repairs to the comer of Young and Queen Streets, beside the Taranaki Club, have been begun by the New Plymouth Borough Council. The wide stretch of road, not long ago altered by the removal of an awkward corner, had been very much in need, of attention, and its neat appearance and improved surface will be appreciated by motorists and pedestrians.

“The whitebait in the Waikato River are decreasing steadily,” said Mr. C. A. Whitney at a meeting of the council of' the Auckland Acclimatisation Society, when it was decided to seek information from Mr. A. E. Hefford, inspector of fisheries, concerning the matter. “Why not limit the bag?” asked Mr. G. G. Kelly, whereupon Mr. M. E. Fitzgerald suggested there should be a restriction on the length of whitebait permitted to be caught.

Quite an extensive programme of tarsealing is to be undertaken by the Napier City Council during the next six months, including the reconditioning of a number of roads in Napier south which have not been dealt with since the earthquake. Several of the hill roadswill also be resurfaced. The commencement of the work is delayed pending the definite settlement of the weather. Practically the whole of the footpaths in the business area of Napier have now been laid with concrete slabs.

Judges of the first and second divisions of the Court of Appeal sat together on Wednesday to announce their reserved decisions in the appeal involving the estate of the late Hon. William Barnard Rhodes under a will made in 1878. By a majority decision judgment was given in favour of the plaintiffs, which means that the Rhodes trustees’ property at Highland Park, valued 'at about £200,000, has been legally vested in William, the 19-year-old son of the late Captain RhodesMoorhouse. Influenza in its mild form is very prevalent throughout Wanganui, and the surrounding districts. In the city the staffs of many of the business houses are appreciably depleted, while at Marton and the immediate countryside the complaint is widespread, and sh&ws little or no signs of abating. No cases of pneu-monic-influenza have been reported, however, and though there have been some instances of pneumonia, these have no relative source with the general influenza. The health authorities insist that in cases of such sickness great care should be taken to obviate the possibility of more serious consequences. If any further evidence were required of the kindly interest that the Gov-ernor-General, Lord Bledisloe, takes in the people of the Dominion, it is provided in a letter he has written to Mr. J. A. Crawford, a centenarian, of Naseby, an account of whose life was recently published. Lord Bledisloe wrote as follows: “I have just read an account which recently appeared of your long and remarkable career, extending, in varied experiences, over more than 100 years. Accept my hearty congratulations on your rare achievement in having passed your one hundred and third year in possession of many-of your faculties and with the capacity to enjoy a ripe old age. Her Excellency and I send to you and Mrs. Crawford our best wishes, and trust that you may long continue to keep well and happy.”
