HAWEIRA TRACKS HOLDING

NOT MUCH GALLOPING DONE.

CARFEX SHOWING IMPROVEMENT.

The tracks were rather holding for work at Hawera yesterday. The .trial grass was open for fast work but there was not a great deal of galloping. Arouse (Vaughan) and the Diac-quenod-Avalo gelding (W. E. Pine) sprinted three furlongs but were not required to make time. Both shaped satisfactorily and are developing well. Havering (Glenn) worked over six furlongs at a similar gait, cracking on the pace slightly over the last two furlongs to register 2715. Don Erma (Feasey) was a couple of lengths in front of Ingenuity (W. E. Pine) at the end of three furlongs in 39 4-ss. The High Art filly is inclined to be sluggish and unless shaken will not do her best.

Carfex (Vaughan) and Whenuakura (Duncan) were sent out of the •barrier, hopping away in great style. Just as they were going out Carfex cannoned into Whenuakura and almost dislodged Duncan. He had the whole of his body on one side of the chestnut two-year-old but made a miraculous recovery and regained his seat after galloping about fifty yards. ' Later Carfex was taken out again and alone ran half a mile in 50 3-ss. Considering the state of the track it was an excellent effort and clearly shows that he has gone on the right way since winning at the Taranaki Hunt meeting. The inside plough has been put intoorder again and practically the whole of the morning’s pacework took place on this track, the reverse way. Those to be given steady tasks were Diagano, Aga Khan, Oriel, Flying East, Chief Line, Landlark, Haunui, Gibraltar, Richfield, Benedictine, Attentive, Weathercane and March Alone.

Poor limings at Wanganui. The Hawera brigade had a very poor Innings at Wanganui, St. Clara being tile only one to fill a place. She was beaten by a smart hack in Pladie but when more thoroughly seasoned and on a larger course she should have no difficulty in winning races. Little Doubt and Gibraltar ran moderate races each day and will need to strike weaker fields than this before they return to the winning list. C. Jackson’s pair Aga Khan and Diagano went fair races but on the whole were rather disappointing. Aga Khan will be better suited by a longer distance and Diagano should make amends when he next puts in an appearance among the maidens. a . As anticipated The Tiger was not at his best and his form was not impressive. He will not be taken to Foxton on Saturday. Of the local horses No Doubt’s form was by far the hardest to understand for the Chief Ruler gelding .had been galloping really well prior to leaving and his prospects appeared bright. He was never sighted, in-his race, which was most surprising for he certainly has any amount of pace, even if he does not stay as well as might be desired.
