HAWERA ITEMS.

Mr. and Mrs. J. McKenzie will arrive during the week on a short visit to Mrs. T. F. McKenzie,

Miss Lorna Incleden, who has been visiting Hawera and New Plymouth for the past fortnight, left yesterday morning on her return to Wellington. Mrs. J. Ogle returned from New Plymouth on Monday.

Mrs. Bernard McCarthy entertained a few friends at tea on Friday afternoon. She wore a deep navy crepe romaine 'frock patterned in autumn .'tonings' to greet her friends, Mesdames H. W. Sutton, Gallagher, P. O’Dea, N. F. Stead, Morrissey, Wylie and Miss M. Sutton were among the guests. On Thursday evening the. members of the cast of “The Dwellers in the Darkness” and . their friends gathered at Miss I. E. R. McLean’s residence and paid her a surprise visit, the evening taking the novel form of the presentation of an entirely “original” play, “The Reveller in the Cellar,” written by one of the members. Competitions and music also were enjoyed. 1716 competition was won by Miss L. Incleden, Wellington, and Mr. Ellis. HAWERA BENEDICTS’ CLUB. The last of the series of dances arranged by a committee and enjoyed by the Benedict Club members was held in the Rewa rooms on Friday evening, when there were about 45 couples present. Exhibitions were given of the two old-time dances, the maxina and the hesitation waltz. It was also announced that although this was the last dance in the series the evenings while being most enjoyable had been very economically managed and the funds remaining in hand were sufficient to permit the running of another evening to complete the season. A yote was then taken to ascertain what manner of entertainment would be most popular, a picture party, supper and: concluding dance being decided upon, to be arranged on lines similar to last season’s final.

Swinbum (reseda green broderie Anglaise), T. R. Overton (dark floral georgette), R. P. Baigent (geranium red organdie voile), V. Powell (ecru coloured broderie Anglaise ensemble), H. Jenkins (forest green silk lace' with fox fur trimmed capelet), E. R. Bavin (sky blue figured pique voile), H. R. Kemp (black georgette and lace), J. Rowe (black georgette and lace), J. W. Velvin (electric blue organdie -voile), R. Gosnell (midnight blue ring velvet with tangerine yolk and puff sleeves), L. H. Giblin (cherry crepe de chine), R. Ward (black and white chiffon velvet); J. E. Dingle (leaf green satin), P. O. Veale (black georgette and lace), H. E. Robinson (rose flared satin), J. Houston (lime green taffetas), McAnerin (royal blue silk lace), Fearon (black crepe romaine), A. H. Harvey (black flowered georgette), G. Williams, Meremere, (grass green fergsye crepe), W. H. Snowsil. (claret chiffon velvet), Egglestone (black and white satin), W. W. Thomas (floral mousseline de-soie), W. Fossey (black silk net over steel grey), Speer (apricot brocaded satin), E. M. Bardsley (turquoise blue satin), W. W. Davy (wine silk lace ensemble), R. R. Henderson (oriental Celanese satin), E. S. Fossey (multi-colour-ed flowered ninon), C. O. Pratt (powder blue ring velvet), J. Duffill (black georgette), L. R. Ritchie (black marietta with floral sleeve flares). ELTHAM ITEMS. Miss Marie Gibson has returned from •a holiday, spent at Punlho as the guest of Miss Nora Bell. Miss Mary Bell is spending a few days as the guest of Miss Marie Gibson. Mrs. H. Clifford . Jones has returned from a visit to the Ba. of Islands. Mrs. J. O’Hagan has returned from a visit to Wellington.
