INJURED CONSTABLE

SEARCH FOR DRIVER. REWARD OFFERED TO POLICE. An offer of a reward of £5 for information leading to the conviction of the motor-car thief who drove the car from which Constable E. E. Stewart was thrown in Williamson Avenuo, Grey Lynn, at midnight last Tuesday, has been made to the Superintendent of Police at Auckland, Mr. S. Till, by the Auckland Automobile Association. Constable Stewart, who suffered a compound fracture of the right leg, a broken thumb and facial abrasions, continues to make satisfactory progress. “The Automobile Association is deeply concerned regarding this last episode in connection with the theft of cars, and the repeated refusals of the Department of Justice to accede to the request of the automobile associations to provide a sufficiently heavy penalty to deter what is termed the conversion of cars,” said Mr. G. W. Hutchison, secretary of the association. “The association has felt it necessary to make a definite move to protect motorists and has offered this reward in, the hope that the Justice Department will at last be induced to amend the law.”

Superintendent Till said the association had also forwarded a cheque for £5 for Constable Stewart. He had communicated with police headquarters in Wellington in cbnnection with the acceptance of the reward. Since Constable Stewart was injured detectives have been busy daily searching for the driver of the stolen' car, but no arrest has been made.
