VOLUME OF POEMS
FROM CANBERRA’S PRESS.
WORK OF TWO OFFICERS. Much interest attaches to a little book of poems, neatly bound in green, which comes from the press of H.M.A.S. Canberra, now in port at Wellington. This little book, entitled “Sea Voices,” contains the work of two officers of the vessel, Lieutenant A. W. R. McNicholl and Lieutenant G. C. Ingleton, the poems of the former, who is now in England, and the illustrations by the latter, all executed during a cruise around Australia last year.
Quite naturally, most of the poems possess a real tang of the sea, and some are of such quality as to have received exceedingly favourable comment from critics in Australia. The second verse of “Sea Picture” is a happy example of imaginative writing:—
Like veils of gossamer the night-mists
Uncertain, as if waiving on the wind; And through the banks of silver-braided clouds, The stars look down with bright, incurious eyes, Ever indifferent; not surprised to find A primrose moon entangled in the shrouds.
Lieutenant Ingleton, who was responsible for a set of captivating illustrations, is keenly interested in all kinds of pictorial art, particularly etchings, engraving and wood-cuts. Recently he printed on the Canberra’s press a small volume of book-plates, the work of John B. Godson, a Sydney artist. This volume, together with “Sea Voices,” is most attractively printed, initial letters in red giving a pleasing effect. Two hundred and ninety-eight copies of “Sea Voices” were printed, 270 of which were sold within two days at 7s 6d a copy. One is still held for sale in Sydney, £2 being asked for it. Lieutenant Ingleton printed 150 copies of his volume of book plates, which is printed on hand-made paper. Half were done for the New South Wales Book Plate Club,
