WORLD SCULLING TITLE

PEARCE MEETS PHELPS TO-DAY. COURSE ADVANTAGE TO RIVAL. By Telegraph—Press Assn.—Copyright. Toronto, Aug. 30. With the world’s professional sculling title at stake Bobby Pearce (Australia) and Ted Phelps (England) have concluded their training and are awaiting Friday’s gun. Both are reported to be in the pink of condition and anxious to match blades over the Canadian National Exhibition course. Pearce to-day was a substantial favourite over his lighter rival, but experts are non-committal as to his chances. Peace said to-day he was hopeful that the exhibition officials would agree to his request that the string of buoys placed down the centre of the mile long course will be removed. “It is quite unprecedented in championship sculling,” said Mr. Jim Rice, Pearce’s coach. “If Bob is forced to keep to the centre of the course rowing up and down that breakwater course he will have to put up with whatever wind there is. Phelps will be protected, as he can run along under cover of the sea wall, and if Bob strikes his oar just once on one of those buoys it will be the ’ end.”
