ALERT CONSTABLE
sequel TO LEVIN THEFTS. ARRESTS AT FOXTON. Foxton, Aug. 29. His suspicions aroused by the arrival in Foxton of two strange ■ women who alighted from a taxi with five heavy suitcases, Constable R. Owen kept them under observation, and later in the day saw them joiiied by two men who arrived from the south by service car. The strangers deposited then- luggage with a Hindu fruiterer in Mam Street, and after looking arojind town for some time left on foot by the northern highway without their luggage. Constable Owen got in touch with the Levin police, and Constables Burrell and Warren immediately proceeded to Foxton, where an examination of the luggage was made, in which it was discovered that they were filled with clothing and dress goods reported missing from two Levin drapery establishments which had been burgled during the week-end. The constables set out in a car in pursuit of the strangers, and overtook them a few miles north of Foxton. They were brought back to Foxtbn and later removed to Levin. Subsequently Bernard Cummings, aged 21, and Garth Durrant, aged 24, appeared before Mr. G. D. Hamilton, J.P., and were charged with breaking and entering the premises of Mr. J. E. Wallace, Oxford Street, Levin, and Mr. William Davie, also of Oxford Street, Levin, some time during Saturday night. On the application of Constable F. Burrell, the two accused were remanded to Wellington, and will appear at Levin on Tuesday, September 5. This is the second arrest made by Constable Owen within a few days, the other being when he took in charge two men for unlawfully converting a car in Levin.
