WALKER-VARGA SENSATION

EVENTS IN WRESTLING WORLD. MAMOS AND RUMBERG UNBEATEN.

(By

“Hammerlock.’’)

The big wrestling sensation of the season was Varga’s defeat of Walker last Thursday at Wellington. There is no doubt, however, that Walker’s disqualification saved him from losing the odd fall which was not the case when he was last beaten, for on that occasion he would probably have beaten Pinto if he had not been disqualified. Both disqualifications were at Wellington. As was stated last week, Walker was not anxious to meet Varga on Thursday. His tour had been very strenuous. and his arm was beginning to be painful when he was at Hawera. He. filled his engagement in a splendid spirit. This leaves the position very open for the third bout with each man having secured a doubtful victory. Mamos, who saw the Wellington contest, predicts that there will be little between the men. He told “Hammerlock” that Varga would have won at Wellington but he was not so sure what would have happened if Walker han been fit. Walker still has a strenuous few weeks ahead of him. He has to dispose of Varga and then there are the only two unbeaten men, Mamos and Rumberg, with each of whom he will have at least two bouts. He has not wrestled Oswald yet and though he should beat the American, flying tackles will, keep him very busy, especially as he is not as fast on his feet as Mamos. Mamos’ cool display against Oswald at. New Plymouth was splendid. AU the way he circumvented the American s

dash, two notable instances being his dodging of flying tackles and his escape from a keylock. Oswald did rather better against his crafty opponent than might have been expected, for he slipped out of harm’s way whenever, the Greek tried anything dangerous like the cross and yet made the pace throughout. Pereira, whom Mamos considers to be the best flying tackler, however, is the opponent for Oswald, this being a perfect matching. Walker may visit Taranaki again as he was dissatisfied with his . last bout against - Clark ’at Hawera.. He would come to the province, it is understood, if his visit fitted in with a trip to Wellington. There seems no reason why this could not be arranged, and the Hawera and New Plymouth associations should investigate the possibility. A Walker-Oswald bout ought to be a draw even if Varga, Mamos or Rumberg could not be secured. Beasley, the New Plymouth amateur, showed something of his class with a win over Bert Bailey on Saturday. Bailey has not been wrestling much lately and a return bout when he is in better form would be welcomed. Beasley’s pull in the weights, however, could still indicate him' as the likely winner.
