KOHURATAHI NOTES
EUCHRE PARTY AND DANCE. A further euchre party and dance was held in the Kohuratahi-Whitianga School on Friday evening. The card prizes were won by Mrs. S. Fraser and Mr. Callaghan. After supper ' the room was cleared for dancing, the music being supplied by Mrs. Connor. A Monte Carlo waltz was won by Miss Fay Connor and Mr. D. Gilchrist. During the evening the opportunity was taken by Mr. E. Olliver to present to Mrs. Connor, on behalf of those present, a handsome oak dinner waggon, as a token of appreciation of the many services she has rendered to the district. Mr. and Mrs. M. H. Hoole, who have taken over the property formerly owned, by Mr. A. C. Milne, were recently given a welcome, which also took the form of a tin-eanning party, by the Whitianga residents. A speech of welcome and good wishes was made by Mr, J. Havre, and replied to by Mr. Hoole. Mr. A. C. Milne contributed songs. Dancing and games occupied a very pleasant evening. A very enjoyable evening was spent at the home of Mr. and Mrs. J. Ostler recently, when friends were entertained at ping-pong. Mr. A. G. Ostler, being undefeated, was the winner of the tournament. Supper was served by the hostess. The football match played at Marco last Saturday between Kohuratahi and Tahora resulted in a draw, six all. Owing to the greasy nature of the ground after the heavy rain, the game was not fast, the players having difficulty in handling the ball. Penalties were kicked by J. Carver (Kohuratahi) 2, and for Tahora by L. Shine (2). The points in the competition are now: Kohuratahi 3, Tahora 3, Whapgamomona 0. A practice match for the Kohuratahi team will.be held on Saturday. The Kohuratahi ladies’ hockey team was defeated by the Whangamomona team on Saturday by two goals to nil. As a result of this match Tangarakau and Whangamomona are now even, and this, will necessitate a play-off to determine which team is to travel to Stratford on Saturday next to meet the winners of the southern division in the semifinals of the Taranaki Association’s competition. Although not definitely decided, it is probable that the play-off will take place at Kohuratahi to-day, this being the most suitable ground in the district. A large crowd attended the annual dance of the Kohuratahi Tennis Club. Music was supplied, by Fougere’s Orchestra, and extras were played by Mesdames G- Connor and J. Carver. Mr. R. Cleland was M.C. The Monte Carlo waltz was won by Miss M. Connor and Mr. E. Olliver. The -waltzing competition, judged by Mrs. J. A. Carver and Mr. 'C. O’Dea, was won by Mr. P. Fougere and Miss E. Geever. A competition, number of seeds in a pumpkin, was won by Mrs. Jas. Carver, the prize being a beautifully decorated cake. Mr. F. Baker had the unenviable task of counting the seeds, the number being 368. There was a record yarding at the local saleyards, when prices showed a hardening tendency. Despite the wet conditions due to heavy rain over the weekend, there was a large attendance of buyers, and bidding was brisk. The value of through trains was recently demonstrated when a choice line of 62 heifers was trucked from this district to the order, of Mr. G. Meredith, Katikati, Bay of Plenty, formerly overseer of the Taranaki County Council. The daylight trains announced in. the new time-table for the Stratford-Main Trunk should meet with approval in this district. There is very little difference in the new times for the running of the passenger trains except that there will be a daily service in place of the present thrice weekly.
