KAPONGA TOWN BOARD

Cran, J. P. Gibson, H. J. Mills and W. Marr were also present. A letter was received from the en-gineer-in-chief of the Public Works Department enclosing the inspector’s report upon his visit to Kaponga. The certificate stated that the supply lines were in very good condition. The board expressed satisfaction at the complimentary nature of the report. The secretary of the Plunket Society I wrote asking fox' the free use of the Town Hall on the occasion of its annual children’s fancy dress ball. Free use of the hall was granted. The lessee of the Town Hall wrote asking for a reduction in the hall charges for Saturdays and Wednesday nights. On the ground that the board’s policy was to ease the load on ratepayers no reduction was granted. Of accounts amounting to £926 passed for payment salaries and wages absorbed £l9O, of which £4O was refunded by the Unemployed Board for wages to relief workers. The electricity department for plan and maintenance accounted for £lOO, rent, interest and sinking funds totalled £571 and workers’ compensation insurance £26. The question of converting the board’s loans was discussed and referred to the finance committee for a report to be presented at the next meeting. It was decided to purchase bitumen supplies through the Taranaki Local Bodies’ Association bulk supply scheme. The sub-committee’s action in accepting Messrs. E. Dixon and Co.’s offer of a piano for the Town Hall was confirmed. The board considered a report dealing with outstanding accounts and instructed the clerk to take action regarding their collection. . In connection with the electricity department it was decided that in future when a consumei' is disconnected for non-payment of his account no restoration will be made until all outstanding fees and the restoration fee have been paid. The sub-commitlee consisting of Messrs. A. R. Bates (chairman), Abbott and Cran and the clerk, set up to bring down proposals for the new entrance gates to the park, recommended that the offer of Mr. Heatherly to carry out the work in accordance with a plan submitted at a cost of £2l 10s be accepted, the board to supply the material for the work, which was estimated to cost £23 8s 6d plus wooden boxing, gates and turnstile, and one man to assist the contractor. The contractor agreed to commence the work towards the end of July. The board adopted the sub-com-mittee's report and the work will be i>ut in hand as arranged. The financial report for the quarter ended on June 30 showed the position to be much better than at the same period last year, when the receipts totalled £1722 and the expenditure £lBBl. This year the receipts were £1665, £57 less than last year, but the. expenditure was £1516, £365 less than at the same period last year. The electrical engineer (Mr. A. W. Anderson) reported for June that both plants ran without fault during the period, but the repaired armature was fitted to the d.c. generator to improve generation and assist in the elimination of wireless interference. All headworks apparatus functioned satisfactorily and required very little attention owing to the stream flow being normal during the whole month. A total of 31,310 units was generated in No. 2 power house this total showing a decrease of 2200 units on the same month last year, largely owing to the fact that the final reading was taken a day earlier. It was not necessary to make any purchase of bulk power. , . ~ c Advantage was taken of the fine weather to push on with the pole replacement programme on the main lines, and this portion of the work was consequently much further ahead than usual. Defective poles were replaced in

the Lower Palmer Road, Lower Manaia Road and at Riverlea and Rowan, and the high tension, lines on the Upper Rowan Road were repaired . and restrained for the whole distance of the road. The high tension extension on the Upper Palmer Road received further attention and was in service. Owing largely to quiet weather no interruptions occurred to the service that were worthy of note.

‘ The foreman was authorised to arrange with any of the unemployed workers who desired to make use of ground on the domain, for gardening purposes. The foreman was also authorised to arrange with the adjoining property owners for repairs to the domain fences.
