SOCIAL AND PERSONAL NEW PLYMOUTH ITEMS? Mrs. Newton Allen (New Plymouth) has returned to her home after a short visit to Mrs. G. Collifffewood, Warwick Road, Stratford. Miss Loma Ballantyne, who is on the nursing staff of the Wellington Public Hospital, is spending several weeks at New Plymouth with her mother, Mrs. W.'A. Ballantyne. Mrs. Bethell, who has been visiting Mrs. W. H. Woodward, left on her return to Auckland yesterday. Miss M. Wade left on Monday morning on a brief visit to Dunedin. Miss Nancy Ross, who has been on the nursing staff of the New Plymouth Public Hospital for some years and leaves shortly to take up a position at the Auckland Public Hospital, was guest of honour at a very enjoyable evening on Saturday given by Miss Wade and Miss Dew. Miss Stephanie Chambers returned to Wellington on Monday after a visit to Mrs. T. P. Anderson. Mrs. W. Shaw, Miss M. Curd and the Misses Masters, Stratford, were visitors to New Plymouth for the Alpine Club dance on Saturday evening. Miss Margaret Thomas entertained at a very jolly bridge and competition evening on Saturday. The winner of the competition was Miss Peggy Griffiths. Miss Grace Avery has returned from a holiday spent at Wellington. Mrs. O. Samuel and her guest, Mrs. Turner (Wellington) have left on a visit to Palmerston North. Mrs. F. S. Varnham left on Saturday on a visit to Levin and Wellington. Tributes to the services of Sister N. J. Ross during her term on the nursing staff of the New Plymouth Hospital were paid by members of the Taranaki Hospital Board yesterday. Sister Ross has resigned to join the staff of the Auckland Hospital, and it was decided to send her a letter of appreciation. The resignation of Miss R. E. de Lautour from the staff of the Opunake Cottage Hospital was received with regret by the Taranaki Hospital Board yesterday. The resignation of Miss O. G. Higgie from the nursing staff of the New Plymouth hospital was received with regret by the Taranaki Hospital Board yesterday, Mrs. R. Davies, Wanganui, was the guest of Mrs. L. C. Members of the Stratford Girl Guides gave a farewell afternoon tea on Friday at the Windsor in honour of Miss Cable, who left for Christchurch on Tuesday. During the afternoon the Commissioner (Mrs. Steven) and the president (Mrs. Moon) conveyed their regrets at the departure of Miss Cable and a letter signed by the committee was read, thanking the guest of honour for her services and wishing her the best of luck. A welcome was extended to Misses Lewis Dinah Renau and Flora Mitchell as new members and to Miss June Rei, of the Okaiawa Institute. HAWERA ITEMS. Mrs. S. Rae, Dunedin, accompanied by Mrs. T. Jemison, also of Dunedin, who have been staying with Mr. and Mrs. H. H. Bramwell, left by car yesterday for Wellington. , Miss Cicely Bridge, New Plymouth, who was Mrs. L. B. Lewis’ guest over the week-end, has returned home. Mrs. A. K. North left yesterday on a short visit to Wellington. Mrs. Lindsay Bull, Hunterville, who has been Mrs. J. Rowe’s guest for the past few weeks, returns home this week. Mrs. E. M. Bardsley is .spending a week in Wellington with friends. About 15 tables were in play at the Park Croquet Club’s flag “500” evening held at the Foresters’ Hall on Thursday. Mr. Webber managed the play on behalf of the committee. Prizes for the highest score went to' Mrs. Blackmore, Misses M. Smale and E. Muir and Mr. H. Collier, who were at the winning table. Mr. and Mrs. T. C. Hobbs, Mrs. Baker and Mr. M. Jones received consolation gifts. A cosy fire and a rom fragrant with daphne, violets and bowls of pink eamelias, made very welcome a number of guests on Friday and Saturday afternoons, when Mrs. W. Syme entertained at tea in honour of her daughter, Mrs. T. H. Underhill, Karori, Wellington, who is spending a holiday with her. The hostess wore a smart toilette of floral marocain in autumn tones, while the guest of honour chose a velvet gown in a plum tone. Among the guests were Mesdames J. Dash, J. Ogle, P. O. Veale, H. Mr. and Mrs. R. McDonald, Australia, are spending a week or two in Hawera. Mr. ' McDonald is the auditor for the Bank of New South Wales.

ELTHAM MILITARY DANCE.

LARGE CROWD ATTENDS.

The Eltham Town Hall was filled with local residents and visitors from many parts of Taranki on Monday evening, the occasion being the grand military dance arranged by the Eltham Troop of the Legion of Frontiersmen and the Eltham Territorials. A thoroughly enjoyable evening was spent by the large assemblage, the programme being one of old-time dances entirely. The hall was attractively canopied with a spider-web of coloured streamers, while military accoutrements and flags completed the decorative effects. The presence of frontiersmen and territorials in uniform added colour to the scene. Among those present were Colonel C. N. Vickridge, officer commanding the New Zealand Legion of Frontiersmen, Capt. W. Ricketts, O.C. M Squadron, Lieut. Langley, O.C. Ohawe Troop, Lieut. Carncross, O.C. Eltham Troop, Corporal Oliver, Stratford Troop, Lieut. J. Scott, adjutant M Squadron, Corporal G. Cox, Ohawe Troop, Colonel G. F. Bertrand, O.C. Taranaki Regiment, Major L. M. Fairbrother, O.C. B Company, Capt. Scott, Transport Officer Ist Battalion, Lieut. Morton, No. 3 Machine Gun Platoon. The proceedings opened with the grand march led by Col. Vickridge and Mrs. A. Beesley, the Lancers following immediately. . , The music was played by Vinsens Ambassadors with extras by Mrs. Attrill, Mrs. Beesley and Miss Old. An excellent supper was served under the direction of Mesdames Murray and Gyde. „ Quarter Master Sergt. R. B. A shower evening was tendered recently at Te Kiri to Miss Hilda Tindle, who is to be married to-day. The organisers were Mrs. Sayed and Mrs. Horgan, and the function was held in the supperroom of -the hall. Notwithstanding the weather there about 50 or 60 persons present. A euchre tournament was won by Mr. S. Marshall and Mrs. Sayed, the consolation prizes going to Mr. W. Crawford and Miss I. Emeny. A smelling competition was won by Mrs. R. F. Tindle, and an advertisement spotting competition by Miss M. McLellan. Mr. R. Gatenby requested Miss Tindle to accept the gifts. Mr. R. Sturgeon, her fiance, replied. He thanked them all, especially the basketball team and the organisers. The new head-teacher, Miss Taylor, was welcomed by the school committee at its meeting last week. Mr. O. Stockwellj Pungarehu, is visiting old friends here. Miss W.- Gatenby, Matapu. is spending a few days with her brother, Mr. Rgatenby.
