CALL OF THE GOLD FIELDS
MANY CLAIMS IN CROMWELL AREA. GRANTS WAITED FOR. Dunedin, July 10. If the extensive pegging which continues can be taken as a guide, then Cromwell is still in the grip of the gold boom. As' far away as Cardrona pegging still goes bn, much of it in large areas. Some of those interested are said to be acting on. behalf of overseas capital-
Some idea of the recent activity in pegging is contained in official figures from the local court for the quarter ended June 30, no fewer than 223 applications being filed. For the first ten days of the next quarter, July 1 until to-day, 153 fresh applications have been, filed, and the number is certain to be increased daily. Over the week-end many representatives of capital and company interest were in Cromwell. In the absence of grants of the many areas applied for nothing on the practical side is being attempted. Once these are forthcoming a large number of men will soon be at work. Tho weather is now settled, with hard frosts.- . ■
