BUSINESS AT 102
ACTIVE MAN OF AFFAIRS.
SUPERVISION OF INTERESTS.
Mr. James Walden, Launceston, Tasmania, attained the age of 102 years a few days ago. On the day before his birthday he told an interviewer that a few minutes later he would have been on his way to the city to deal with a business transaction in which he was interested. Mr. Walden came to Australia as a young man, and in Victoria tried his luck on the goldfields and started in business, but for health reasons he went to Launceston in 1861. He had a skin and leather business, then a retail grain and produce store. Having acquired considerable property in Launceston and Hobart he still personally supervises the business of his real estate. When Mr. Walden arrived in Launceston he had to pay £5 in duty on a piano and £2 10s a wheel on a landau. He thought those fees too high, but this year he had to pay £2OOO in income tax, land tax and rates. He is very active, his sight is keen and his hearing is but little affected by his great age.
