HIGHWAY ADVENTURE

rear axle of car breaks WHEEL CONTINUES TRIP ALONE. THRILLING QUEST FOR PERMIT. John Gilpin in his epic ride on his wedding anniversary had nothing on some anxious North Taranaki travellers last night, and the people who assembled at Inglewood to witness a boxing and wrestling tournament little realised by what a narrow margin they escaped being deprived altogether of their evening’s enjoyment. • , There was some irregularity w be remedied in connection with the issue a police permit for the Taranaki Sports and Pastimes Club, in connection with last night’s tournament at Inglewood, and Sergeant Kelly, of Stratford, Constable Longbottom, of Inglewood, Messrs. H. Gush, secretary of the Tariki club, and G. E. Carter, secretary of the Stratford Boxing Association, were proceeding to New Plymouth in a car driven by Mr. Carter to finalise matters with Inspector S. Rawle. When they were approaching the Waiwakaiho bridge near Egmont Village, the car having just passed another car and trailer froni the opposite direction, the rear axle broke an the left rear wheel came off. ior a moment it appeared as though the car would capsize, but fortunately this not happen. The vehicle swerved, narrowly missing an electric light pole, and came to rest against a post in the fence, just past a filling where there was a 9ft. drop. The five occupants of the car, including a friend of Sergeant Kelly, escaped practically unscathed, Sergean Kelly and Mr. Carter being somewhat shaken. They got out of the car in tune to see the wheel make a final plunge into the river after having careered about 400 yards across a field on .he right side of the road. The occupants of the car proceeded to New Plymouth in passing cars, completed arrangements for the permit and returned to Inglewood by bus, the tournament thus being able to proceed. Spectators little knew how narrowly postponement was averted. •
