EARLIER FORM UPSET

SEVERAL LARGE DIVIDENDS PUZZLE FOR SATURDAY’S RACES. AMYRIL'S FINE PERFORMANCE. c (By Wire —Special to News.) Wellington, Last Night. Form was considerably upset at Trentham to-day when the second day of the Wellington fixture was held in fine weather and on a course that though heavy was good for the winter. After to-day’s results racegoers may find themselves somewhat tangled when they come to solve Saturday’s problems. One of the most decisive wins was that of the New Plymouth filly Amyril in the last race when, fortunately for the Taranaki contingent, she paid a false price. Thurina, backed Jo a very short price, just failed to win the Mariri Hack Steeplechase from Jen, whose dividend reached sensational proportions. Thurina’s backers were unlucky. Thurina fenced, finely but Jen and Kaokaoroa put on the pace in the last round and gave the favourite a lot of ground to make up. Under pressure Jen stayed on to win by a length, while Tunbridge was only a length behind Thurina. Kaokaoroa, who was fourth, should do better soon. Fine Acre was fifth. Jen’s showing was a big improvement on his recent form. He ran a good race in the Egmont Steeplechase but this was following by a long list of failures until to-day. He paid a fine double-figure dividend on the straightout machine. Thurina ran a fine race under his big weight and would have pressed the winner very closely had he made a better jump at the last fence. Tunbridge was again responsible for a creditable showing. Fine Acre broke down when running in a handy position three furlongs from home. Kaokaoroa did much better than on Tuesday and is evidently improving.

Passion Fruit’s Runaway Win. Passion Fruit scored a runaway win in the Trial Plate. Drawing No. Ihe jumped away well and was l never headed, winning by five lengths from Nightly, who was always handily placed. Cyclonic was a length and a half away third, En Vidette was fourth, and then came Epigram, Secrecy, Windward and Asterisca.* Headmistress, well supported, did not begin well and was never prominent. The machine said that Passion Fruit would run well, and it proved correct. He drew the rails and was in a handy position at the straight entrance. He soon took charge and' went away to win by four lengths. He is a two-year-old by Lord Quex and showed promise at the recent Hawke’s Bay meetings. Nightly ran well, and Cyclonic finished in good style. Headmistress’ failure was surprising as even though she did not get away well she should have been closer at the finish. Mercian Prince’s Good Price.

Downing the favourite, Swift and Sure, in the Seatoun Handicap, Mercian Prince paid another, double-figure dividend. Swift and Sure was the leader to the straight with Mercian Prince and Currajong following. Mercian Prince collared Swift and Sure a furlong off the post and beat him home by two lengths. Thrasher finished well in ••third place. High Speed, Cardinal Moon and Currajong followed. Swift and Sure is very well but in the heavy going Mercian Prince outstayed him. Drumfire ran badly. Sir Musk Surprises.

The run of surprises continued when Sir Musk got up at the post and won the Corunna Hurdles. Paleta knocked •the first fence flat but led nearly all the way. Gold Knight was handy crossing the top and at the straight entrance Hounslow joined 'in. Hounslow shot to the front but Paleta was in’charge again after crossing the last hurdle. Once more Hounslow headed him, but then Sir Musk took the race from Hounslow by a head; Paleta was a fair third and Gold Knight was fourth.. Form was not easy to follow. Both Hounslow and Sir Musk were greatly improved. Received a Good Run.

Cylinder received a fine run on the rails all the way when he won the Parliamentary Handicap. He was just behind the leaders, Beacon Fire and 'Protomint, at the straight entrance, but in the end had to be ridden out to beat Seatown by half a length. Protomint was quickly among the leaders but failed to run on in the final pinch. Beacon Fire was not helped by having to make the running. Chang ran a fair race, and so did Little Doubt. Gibraltar was never prominent. Had the ground been wet Seatown would have won.

Won Ail‘the Way. Valueless was first out and first home in the Highweight Handicap. In the middle stages he was eased arid Tea Garden and Shootist led nearing the straight from Ramuna, March Alone, Adventus and Love Court. Valueless drew to the front at the entrance .to the straight but Love Court and Emancipation challenged and Valueless only just scraped home by a neck, with Emancipation two lengths away third and March Alone fourth. Then came High Pitch and Adventus. Valueless confirmed his Ellerslie running and won well, though he was all out at the finish. Love Court appeared unlucky, and though he pui in a groat run in the straight he just failed to get up. Emancipation ran well enough to draw attention to his • changes in the Winter Hurdles on Saturday. March Alone was close to the pacemakers all the way but did not run on.

Change of Riders Succeeds. With Voitre substituted for an apprentice Manawhenua won , the Members’ Handicap in good style from Merry Peel. Royal Hunting and Slippery carried on the running to the straight, and both put up good fights to retai" the lead. Manawhenua shot to the front below the distance but Merry Peel issued a’ determined challenge and failed only by a length. . Royal Hunting again hung on well to finish a good third. Slippery and All Humbug together were just ahead of Glenvane. Manawhenua' won like a good horse. He was always well placed and made a great “dab” at the distance which put him a 'couple of lengths clear. Merry Peel was not well placed early but again come home strongly. Royal Hunting hung on to secure third money after making most of the pace. Slippery stopped badly after being with Royal Hunting in front for a little over half a mile. Glenvane had every chance but weakened over the last furlong. Cottesmore whipped round as the tapes went up. and was hopelessly left.

Amyril’s Decisive Win. Amyril ran away with the Petone Handicap and paid a good price. She reached the front early in the contest and was never headed. Good Dress and Pladie were handy at the home bend but Amyril made them look cheap in the run home, winning by three lengths and confirming the opinion that she is good. Pladie was second but had no chance with the winner. Woodful was finishing fast in third place and may be due soon, while Sir Pombal ran a fair fourth. West Tor and Heather Glow were next. The first day’s race evidently improved Amyril more than it did Pladie, for she ran right fiwa

him at the finish. This full sister to Perfection is evidently a smart sort. Pladie had every chance. He was well placed in behind the leader turning into the straight and momentarily looked like catching- her, but she had too much in reserve. Woodful finished well under his big weight. Gold Dress and Heather Glow showed plenty of pace but did not run on. ■• . / SPRINT MATCH FOR WINOOKA. CALIFORNIAN MARE CHOSEN. San Francisco, July 12.
