WEST END SCHOOL

MEETING OF THE COMMITTEE. CHILDREN’S BALL DECIDED. The monthly meeting of the West Erd school committee was held last night. Present: Messrs. C. Berg (chairman), W. H. Jones, F. Brunton, F. Hooker, A. V. Tinjgey, A. H. Hatfield and F. May. > The headmaster (Mr. W.' A. Brown) reported that.'during the month the roll number, had fallen from 374 to 371. Th<? average attendance- was 357.2. About 5Q . children were receiving the milk ■ ration. ’ All arrangements regarding the collection and distribution of soup at the lunch hour were running smoothly. The thanks of the committee was due to those who had given soup, mugs ’and utensils, and to the boys who collected the soup daily and the girls who washed up. • ‘ Mr. V. Parkinson had begun practices in connection with Association football on June 21 and he had been at' the school each Wednesday afternoon since then to coach the boyj>. About 30 boys .played the code and' Mr. Parkinson was pleased at the progress made.

The sum of £2 3s lid had been spent in the purchase of school requisites for children whose parents., were in needy circumstances. The. junior division of the school.gave a conceit in the gymnasium on June 29, with the object of raising funds to purchase handwork supplies and garden requisites. The -attendance of parents was a pleasing feature; the sum of £3 was raised.

Mr. May reported on the organisation of the. system of distributing ’soup to children at the lunch hour. He said that three refreshment rooms in town had agreed to provide free soup daily. Mugs and other necessary utensils had been donated. He paid a tribute to Mr. Brown for the way in which he had organised the distribution.

, -It was decided to write thanking the firms giving the soup and to thank-all donors of", utensils and those who had helped in any way.

It was decided to write Mr. J. W. Hollows, chairman of the Taranaki Football ■Association, thanking him for the interest taken in introducing the code in the schools and for the donation of a football. ' ■ -

Following the committee’s decision at the last meeting not to permit the inauguration of a weekly dance in the school gymnasium, the orchestra concerned again wrote offering its services free so that the committee could , undertake necessary alterations to the building. While appreciating the offer the committee reaffirmed its decision not to permit the dance to be started. It was decided to hold the school ball on August 17 in the Agricultural Hall. The scale of charges was agreed to. Other details will be arranged, and a meeting of ladies will be held on August 3. Messrs. May and Hatfield were appointed a visiting committee for the ensuing month. Meeting as a Scout and Cub committee, the personnel of the committee was added to by Mesdames Davis, Royce and Hoben and Mr. D. Hedges.

Miss A. Elliot, the cubmistress, reported that tire attendances at parades had been respectively 18, 20, 20 and 22 respectively. One Cub had gone up to the troop. The West End Cubs had defeated' the Fitzroy Cubs> at Rugby by six to nil; a second game had resulted in a draw. Mr. D. Hedges, the. Scoutmaster, reported that the month’s, attendances had been'l2, 11, 14 and 16. Mr.; Noel Watson, an old boy of the troop, had joined'as an assistant and was showing keen interest in his. work.' With Mr. Watsons help, Mr. Hedges.hope;’ to return to last year’s programme of work. There were two recruits. . . . -Visiting committees were appointed es follow: Mesdames Davis and Royce (Cub's) and Messrs. Hatfield and Brunton (Scouts).
