BANNER COMPETITION FINAL. MATIERE-HEAO CONTEST. The final game in the Ohura Rugby Banner competition was played on Saturday between Matiere and Heao Valley on the Ohura ground. Both teams have been great rivals for supremacy all the season, with honours fairly evenly divided, Heao having a three-point lead over Matiere with seven wins and one draw against five wins arid two draws. Heao registered 79 points against 26, whilst Matiere gained 82 for and 26 against. There was a large crowd front the surrounding district to see the game, which was fast and full of excitement throughout Heao won the toss and commenced strongly, forcing a drop out. A smart interchance of kicks about half-way gave Gower a chance to break through for Heao, but Lawlor and Ross saved. Play was confined to Matiere territory till Ross got the ball and carried it to Heao’s twenty-five. Heao forced but McDougal kicked to the line. Matiere then secured from a scrum and McDougal tried to get away on the blind side, but was stopped by Sullivan. Heao pressed the Matiere twenty-five. The defence was very strong and after some line-kicking Matiere secured and got away well, but Heao’s speedy backs spoiled a dangerous movemerit. Pleasants had a shot at goal from - half-way but failed. Matiere came strongly and kept pressing inside Heao’s twen-ty-five. Sullivan intercepted and sent Heao away. Lawlor saved with a linekick. Heao' hooked from' a scrum ten yards from home but was stopped. The next scrum again gave Heao a chance, which was spoiled by a knock on, with a free kick following in Heao’s favour. Ritani goaled. Gower came through but was stopped and Matiere got going. A good save by Parsons sent the ball back and play see-sawed about Matiere’s 25, and a free kick to Heao was saved by Lawlor, who lined. At the resumption play kept close to half-way till Gower secured from a scrum and lined on Matiere’s twentyfive. Aft' interchange of kicks between the full-backs ended in a line-out on green’s twenty-five. Matiere forwards made a good ‘movement till Heao’s wing lined. -Matiere-kept forcing the pace and Sullivan kicked to line. After a series of scrums and lirie-duts a free kick was awarded to Heao. Ritani had a good try from half-way, but the ball fell just short. Heao’s defence was, souhd. Phillips and Sullivan came away but a/flnfe tackle spoiled their chance. Given a free kick Matiere failed, and play was ragged. A mis-kick let the Heao pack through, Lawlor marked and had a shot <at goal, which dropped short. Matiere kept up the- attack and Sullivan was called upon to save several times. Another strong attack was stopped by Parsons, who lined, Matiere secured and Ross kicked- over the dead-ball line. Matiere - would. not be denied. Matiere well deserved the win, but Heao with one point to the .good, Holds the banner pending a protest from Niho Niho over an earlier game. If the.protest is upheld Heao and Matiere will have to meet again. The teams were:—
