TRENTHAM OPENS TO=DAY

MOST EVENTS VERY OPEN HAWKE'S BAY’S STRONG HAND. LUNA LUX’S GOOD CHANCE, (By “Hurry On.”) Trentham is always the meeting ground for the choice of the north and south, and they will all be there to do battle to-day. Excellent fields figure in all events and the racing promises to be the most interesting of the winter season. Tire big attraction will, of course, be the Wellington Steeplechase, but the Whyte Handicap and the Trentham Hurdles will undoubtedly receive much attention. Proceedings commence at 11.45 a.m. with the MATAI HACK STEEPLECHASE. Of £l5O. Two miles and a-half.

style, beating Acervate comfortably on the second occasion, but it is by no means certain that he will be there. Thurina has been schooling in good style at Riccarton and will carry South Island support. Quinopal was placed recently in the south, though there was not a great deal of merit in the performance. Tunbridge has been jumping the country in splendid fashion at Trentham and is expected to put up a great showing.” Fine Acre was amiss a short time ago but has made a quick recovery. Kaokaoroa ran two very solid- races on the Hawke’s Bay circuit.. In the absence of Neil the public may select Tunbridge, Thurina and Kaokaoroa. , WOBURN HACK HANDICAP.

Colossical 8 6 Foreign Queen and Woodful have both big burdens to carry, and it is doubtful if they can concede weight to Drumfire, who has been putting up great trials at Riccarton lately. Errantry has won on his last two starts, but is a little close to Drumfire. Pango and Colossical are improvers, and Amyril has gone the right way since winning -at Foxton. Pladie has a great private reputation for pace, and though he has failed so far he was right up fourth behind Royal Hunting and Hunting Lodge at Marton, and good judges do not expect him to be long in making amends. Repudiation and Gold Dress are a pair of southerners who can go fast. The chances of Drumfire, Errantry and Amyril may be most favoured.

VITTORIA HACK HURDLES.. Of £l5O. One mile, and a-half.

Knollmere, two of the most promising hurdlers seen out this season. The former has won both his races over the battens and the latter in fiis only attempt made an exhibition of his opponents at the Manawatu Hunt meeting. Hounslow has good form in the south, while Vitaphone and Capetown are both shaping well. King Comet and Sir Musk arc a likely pair from the Auckland province and' are expected to pay expenses. High Grader and Knollmere will carry the big money, but Sir Musk will not be neglected. ; STEWARDS’ HANDICAP. Of £2OO. Six furlongs.

Merry Peel 9 2 On Hawke’s Bay form Huntingdon has all the weight that he is entitled to and may find his task too great. Manawhenua would appreciate an extra furlong or two, but this race should sharpen him up a lot. All Humbug will take on the mile pvents. Slippery is a wonderfully improved horse but may find it difficult to concede weight to The Tiger and Beacon .Fire. Merry Peel usually runs well at Trentham, and Miladi •would only have to act up to her track work to be dangerous. Cottesmore is a brilliant sort but may require a race before being seen at his best. Glenvane is well treated and will only have to jump out decently to be handy at the finish. He was in great order when he left New Plymouth. Half a dozen runners will be solidly backed, but the actual favourites may be Beacon Fire, The Tiger and Glenvane.

This is the big event of the day and each one of the eight starters will come in for careful scrutiny when they parade in the birdcage. Last year’s winner, Billy Boy, will carry number one saddle cloth, and the Auckland horse is reported to be in great order. He did not shape impressively over the country on Saturday morning but he can be depended upon to do it right with the colours up. Callamart was the hero of the northern meeting, but he is well up in the .weights now. However, he is a rare good stayer and can handle weight. Make Up ran a really good race in the Winter Steeples on the final day at Ellerslie and he has gone the right way since then. This course .should suit him better than Ellerslie. Lima Lux has won, six , times on end and those who saw him on the Hawke’s Bay circuit consider he will make it seven here. He has a handy weight and knows the way to negotiate the big fences. Little Copey failed at Ellerslie but he has now a weight that he can handle. High Pitch has not much form to recommend him, but is reported to jump the country welt Omeo is handily handicapped. He was unlucky at Wanganui and was going well in the Northern when he hit a fence. He has worked in good style of late. Valves, the sole hope of the South Island, is reported to be a safe fencer. Every runner will carry good support, but the most favoured may be Luna Lux, Make Up and Billy Boy. TRENTHAM HURDLE HANDICAP. Of £250. One mile and three-quarters. Paddon 10 11 Henry of High Faintin’ 10 5 Navarre 9 10 Pahu 10 5 Adventus 9 7 Morena 10 1. Solanio 9 0 Membo 10 0 Alias Hastings 9 0 Gold Knight 9 10 Paddon Avon this race last year and his form at Ellerslie was good. He has a new pilot in L. Dulieu, and it remains to be seen whether he will race as generously as he did for Rennie and Burgess. High Falutin’ failed under a big load at Hastings, but his Wanganui wiii was impressive. Pahu is in good order and very fit, but will need to be at his best to hold the southerners Morena and Membo, who are just striking form. Gold Knight has been winning in the south and is distinctly promising. Henry of Navarre ran a splendid race at Napier and will only need to have improved a little in the interval to be dangerous. Solanio and Miss I Hastings are a useful pair but may do

better later in the meeting. The main fancies may be High Falutin’, Paddon and Henry of Navarre. WHYTE HANDICAP.

problem to punters. Old Seatown ran two great races at Ellerslie, and the big course here is going to be in his favour. Cylinder showed. at Napier that he is far from a spent light, and as he is reported to have gone the right way since then he must be given serious consideration; he is a class horse when at his best. Retract invariably performs well at Trentham, but. the big field will not be in his favour. All Humbug won the Foxton Cup on his last start, and he has the pace to get a good position early. Curie has been responsible for some great trials, and despite his failure at Napier there are many good judges who expect him to make amends very shortly. Chief Marionette has improved wonderfully during the last two months, but on- Hawke s Bay form Cylinder should account for her. Speedmint and Protomint are doubtful starters, but would be well supported if they went to the post. The distance will not suit Gibraltar, but the other Hawera representative, Little Doubt, was third to Royal Bengal and Fast Passage in this event last year. Copper King, Zeebrugge and Chang are all possibilities. In a good betting race most support may come for Cylinder, Seatown and Curie. TE ARO HACK HANDICAP. Of £l5O. Seven furlongs. . -

Thrasher would be better suited by a distance of ground, but Valueless ran well enough at Ellerslie to draw attention to her chances. West Tor has won on his three starts so easily that he is evidently a hack above the average. . Ida Merling at Wanganui and March Alone have both displayed winning form. ,Swift and Sure demonstrated at Napier ; "that he is coming back to his form of the spring, while at Riccarton Heather Glow has been galloping in great style. . Dick Whittington usually shows his best • at Trentham,. and the West Coast horse ; Gold Arrow is reported to be a-likely • sort. West Tor, Ida Merling and Heather s Glow may do well. ... ....... . •_ I- ■, ..•. ( -— > trentham track heavy

SLIPPERY BEATS ROYAL HUNTING. WITHDRAWALS ANNOUNCED. ; By Telegraph—Press Association. • ' •; Wellington, July 10. Heavy rain over the week-end altered the outlook for the opening day of. the. Wellington meeting to-morrow and the track will now be heavy.'. Going on- the trial grass was slippery this morning, but was in rather better order than might have been anticipated after so much rain. The weather now appears to be clearing. Normandy, picked up by Sunee at the half-mile, ran six furlongs in Im. 22s . Grand Score finished a good length in front of Chang at the end of five furlongs in Im. 84s. . . Paddon was not going • well at the close of five furlongs in lm. 10s. Beryl Latour beat Cardinal Moon decisively by two lengths over half a mile in 545. Passion Fruit finished half a length m front of Pladie at the end of three furlongs in 38s. Cylinder went better than many expected in beating Colossical easily by two lengths over five furlongs in lm. 75., the last half-mile in 53Js. Cylinder was always doing it well and came away at the end.. ■ . Ida Merling was a ’ length ..ahead of Swift and-Sure at the end of half a mile in 5215. Chief Marionette was just a head .better than Henry of Navarre over six furlongs in lm. 2145., the last half-mile in. 54-Js. March Alone finished three lengths ahead of Weathergaze after going five furlongs, the last half in 54Js. Redtop and Chile did half a mile comfortably in 555. . ■ The best effort of the morning was Slippery’s half a. length defeat of Royal Hunting over half a mile in 5145. , All Humbug proved two lengths, too good for Stanchion over six furlongs in lm. 225., the last half-mile in 555. Coming away when required in the last furlong, Tavern Knight attracted attention by soundly beating Palace by five or six lengths over half a mile in 5215. Miladi finished two lengths in front of Shootist, with Make Up well back, at the end of six furlongs in 1.21 J, the last half-mile in 5445. Huntingdon slipped over three furlongs in 395. The only jumping was a good school over three hurdles by Adventus (M. H. Nicol). According to the rider-trainer Adventus has suffered no ill effects whatever from his recent escapade at Hastings. High Pitch (H. Dulieu) jumped one brush but did. not make much of a job of it. Most of the visitors are now to hand, and they were all out working this morning, but the tasks of those not mentioned were confined to pacing or short'sprints alone. The only scratchings to 1 p.m. to-day were Neil, All Humbug (Steward’s, 11.30 a.m. to-day) and Dick Whittington. RACING AT ELLERSLIE. WEIGHTS FOR SPECIAL MEETING.
