Jackson, South Road, who was admitted to the Hawera public hospital last week after amputating four fingers of his left hand while cutting firewood with a circular saw, is regarded as satisfactory. Commissioner J. Cunningham, chief o/ the Salvation Army in New Zealand, visited Hawera last night and addressed a large meeting in the army hall. GENERAL ITEMS.. Orangemen’s Church Parade. Orange Lodge members paraded at the Hawera Methodist Church on Sunday, representatives of the order from other parts of the province arid as far afield as Wanganui and Christchurch being also present. The Rev. B. Metson preached from the text “Stand fast therefore in the liberty wherewith Christ hath made us free?’ The choir sang an introit “Jesus Stand Among Us” composed by Mr. H. C. A. Fox, and the anthem “Sun of My Soul,” with solo by Mrs. A. W. Tugwell. Miss Mavis Reid recited the qualifications of an Orangeman.

Hospital Nurses’ Cooking. Nurses of the Hawera hospital recently sat for a practical examination in invalid cookery, the results being: Nurse E. Wilson 90, Nurse A Cornish 89, Nurse H. Wills 82, Nurse M. Byers 79. This class is conducted at the Hawera High School by Miss B. Earl and the examiner was Miss C. Hunter, who commented favourably on the work of the nurses. Relief Allocations. Relief work this week was allocated to 167 Hawera registered unemployed—--112 A class men, 105 B and 50 C class men, as compared with 182 men last week. Lower Grade Rugby. Lower grade Rugby Union matches in South Taranaki on Saturday resulted: Third grade, Patea 16 v. High School 3, Old Boys 6 v. Hawera 5; fourth grade, Hawera 6 v. Waimate 3, Okaiawa 3 v. Kaponga 3. School Rugby and Basketball. Rugby football and basketball teams from the Feilding Agricultural High School will arrive at Hawera by the Taranaki express to-morrow evening and next day they will take part in matches against the Hawera Technical High School. Assessment Court at Hawera.

A sitting of the Assessment Court will be held at the Courthouse, Hawera, on July 28 for the purpose of hearing objections to the revised valuation roll for the Hawera borough. Piliama Personal Notes.

Miss A. Glengarry has taken a position nursing in the Raetihi Hospital. Mr. Barclay and Mr. Cath:s are two new residents in the district. They have each taken portion of the late Mr, A. McKeown’s farm.
