ELLERSLIE RACES TO-DAY

HURDLES AND CORNWALL BILLY BOY AND PADDON FANCIED. * ....... MANAWHENUA'S PROSPECTS., (By “Hurry On.”) ; • The Dominion’s most important jumping fixture will open to-day—the Auckland Racing Club’s winter gathering at Ellerslie. With the exception of the Greenlane Steeplechase, spleridid fields are engaged in every event, and all are very open. The principal events will be the Great Northern Hurdles . and the Cornwall Handicap. . t v The programme will open with the JERVOIS HANDICAP! ■ Of £2OO. Seven furlongs. First division.

Woodful is a proved weight-carrier and a very honest sort under whiter conditions. He has been, racing without much luck but this field is not particularly strong. Royal Gallant usually, goes well on this course and Gay Broney may do better than at Te Rapa, where h® failed when well fancied. Chief Lap and Tatyoon are improving, while Caliente, who has been galloping in good style, Allegretto, a winner at Te Rapa, and Great Britain appear the best of the light-weights. There is nothing outstanding here, but Chief Lap, Allegretto and Woodful may go’ well. GREENLANE STEEPLECHASE. Of £225. About two miles and a-half.

Ndil has been schooling in great style in company with the Great Northern candidates, and these showings point strongly to his going well, though if Standfast is going to have any show in the bigger event on Monday he will have' to run prominently hete. ' Kairuri, whose jumping has improved considerably of late, is likely to beat most of the others. ' r JERVOIS HANDICAP. Of £2OO. Seven furlongs. Second division. (12.25 p.m.) . ' '

Gay Marigold has been scratched from the Members’. King Win is a good hack, but is inclined to be unreliable at the post. Holly Lu and Mahkill are a likely pair and Bugle Call would ,only have to reproduce the form he showed at Stratford .to have a great chance. The final gallops on Thursday pointed strong-, ly to Sinking Fund and Landlubber. They are both good beginners and revel in the soft ground. Dark Marble and Hunting Star are possibilities. The most favoured, will-probably be Sinking Fund, Landlubber and King Win. PENROSE HURDLES. Of £225. One mile and three-quarters.

,'Ganpat’s showing on the second day of the- Wanganui meeting was not his true form and he can be depended upon to do better here. Unoco and Radiant Sun performed well at Te Rapa and both should benefit as a result of their outings there. Good-reports have come through .regarding Snow Prince’s jumping, and the North Auckland horse will be watched with interest. Marble King is useful and Sir Musk’s third at the Te K.uiti meeting was full of promise. Principal has been responsible for some attractive schooling displays during, the last few days, and from the .way Catoma is galloping she w'U only require to fence decently to be well in the picture. Most support may come for Ganpat, Principal and Snow Prince. GREAT NORTHERN HURDLES. ; Of £9OO. Two miles' and a-half. (1.56 p.m;)

This event has already been reviewed in detail. The final trials did not throw much fresh light on form, and present indications point to the prime fancies being Billy Boy, Paddon,' Full Mark and Emancipation. CORNWALL HANDICAP. Of £550.. One mile and a-quarter.

This race has also been fully discussed. Thursday’s work demonstrated that all the fancied division are in good order. Manawhenua, Seatown, Master Brierly, King March, Protomint, Gibraltar, Speedmint, Carfex, Beacon Fire and Ruri all performed well. This is undoubtedly one of the most open races for some time, but most support is likely to come for the Rama bracket (Manawhenua and Taneriri), Gibraltar, Carfex and Beacon Fire; HUNT CLUB HURDLES. Of £2OO. Two miles.

Nuketere will be better suited in the steeplechase the second day, but Solanio is a useful sort. Maunga King was a winner at Te Rapa, but the class was weak. Acervate created a very favourable impression when he finished third to' Birkbeck and Fine Acre at Wanganui and has impressed greatly sini_: arriving at Ellerslie. Zane Grey has shown promise at times and is a good fencer. The popular fancies may be Acervate, Maunga King and Zane Grey. MEMBERS’ HANDICAP. Of £3OO. Six furlongs.

Greek Gold and Tradesman are both recent winners. The former won on his last start at Avondale and the latter scored in easy style at Te Rapa. Prince Vai usually, begins to show his best at

this time of the year,' and the conditions will also favour Chromadyne, who is reported to be galloping in-great style.: Prolyxo and Miladi, were both, winners; at Te Rapa and the latter has been work-; ing well since then, The, hack Puss Moth,: who is taking.on .open , company first time will not be disgraced. Three ilkely to find favour are Miladi, Trades-1 man and Chromadyne. ’ J ELLERSLIE SCRATCHINGS. • Auckland,; Last Night.. . j Ellerslie scratchings to-day were: Pen-j rose Hurdles,. Ganpat; all engagements,; Chief Lap,. Stanchion. , / - • ? . GALLOPINGi AT ELLERSLIE. ; THE COURSE VERY, HEAVY. l . Auckland, June 2. Trainers had the use of No. 1. grass at ■ Ellerslie this morning, the poles being 10 feet out from the rails. The going was heavy and there was not a great deal of,fast work. ' Gay Broney and Mahkill did five furlongs, running the first two furlbrigs in 27 .2-ss. and the full distance in lm. 9 l-ss. Both handled the going well. Prince Vai ran home from three furlongs in 40 2-ss. He is still looking a bit big in condition. Woodfull, who looks in good order, reeled off three furlongs in 40s. Lord Vai, going easily, took 43 l-ss. for three furlongs. He is to race-on the last day of the . meeting. . . , Grand Talk did strong work, traversing her last three furlongs in' 43 3-ss. Great Britain fan six- furlongs comfortably in lm. 27 3-ss. For a similar distance King Win and Autumn' Rose registered lm. 25 2-ss, the former showing to most advantage. ' - Lucess was .finishing on.abetter than Free Air at the end of five furlongs run in lm. 11 4-ss. Miladi and Make Up ran the last halfmile of their work in 54 4-ss. Both were hitting out very freely. Callamart and Omeo completed the last mile, of - their work in lm. 55 l-55., the final half-mile taking 58 3-ss.

Chromadyne was going: very, easily while running six furlongs in lm. 28 l-ss. Master Norval and Jonathan were together at the end of the same distance in lm. 29 3i55., the last three furlongs being run. in 435. " Kanapa ran half a mile-in 54 l-ss. without being ridden out. Ruri and Knight of Australia ran three furlongs in 39 ’ l-ss.' and ‘ completed six' furlongs in lm. 20. 3-ss. . Knight of Australia had the better of the start, but they were together' at the finish. Both could have done better. 7-I DISQUALIFICATION OF PENTHEUS. BROWN' AND R. ELLIS..; PUNISHED. By Telegraph—Press Assn.—Copyright. Rec. 10 ,p.m.. ' .. Brisbane,' June 2.
