“UNPLEASANT SURPRISE”

ANGLO-ARGENTINE TREATY TREATMENT OF FOREIGNERS FORECAST OF AGREEMENT STATEMENT OF. NEWSPAPER By Telegraph—Press Assn.—Copyright. London, April 28. The Sun has been informed that an unpleasant surprise awaits Australia and New Zealand in the Anglo-Argentine trade treaty, which is believed to include an assurance that if Britain imposes compulsory as against the existing voluntary restrictions on meat imports the imposition will operate equally upon foreigners and the Dominions. This does not imply that compulsion is imminent, but if such a clause is included it will conflict with the Ottawa agreements.

The Daily Telegraph understands that the main points of the agreement are that Argentina will float a loan of £lO,000,000 in London for the purpose of releasing British deposits frozen in the Argentina as the results of exchange restrictions.

There will be a reduction in the Argentine duties on 280 items, including motor vehicles, agricultural machinery and textiles, in return for which Argentina will secure stable markets for its chilled and frozen meat, subject to . the interests of the Dominions and the maintenance of the price level. The agreement will operate for three years. DOUBT CAST ON FORECAST. OPINION IN NEW ZEALAND. By Telegraph—Press Association. Wellington, Last Night. Government circles do not regard as authoritative . th® cablegram suggesting that in the event of the British Government imposing a compulsory quota ,on meat imports from Argentina a similar restriction would be applied to New Zealand and Australian imports. It is stated that the mere fact that the cablegram mentions the action suggested would be an infringement of the Ottawa agreement is sufficient reason for discounting it.
