WRECK OF YACHT MIZPAH
NO LIFEBELTS OR BUOYS ABOARD. EVIDENCE RELATED AT INQUEST. By Telegraph—Press Association. Waipukurau, April 29. In the course of evidence at an inquest at Porangahau yesterday on the death of John Weymouth Hurrell, one of the survivors ,of the wrecked yacht Mizpah, Clifford Crago Harris, the only survivor, said there were in the lifesaving apparatus aboard no lifebelts or buoys, and a dinghy was lashed to the counter until the gale was at its worst and then it had to be cut adrift. He said that the voyage was a pleasure trip, no wages being involved as far as he, Hurrell and Naylor were concemed>He did not know of the arrangements under which Kelleway was doing the trip. The young men Naylor and Hurrell were not experienced yachtsmen, but if he had known that at Auckland he would have gone on the trip just the same. The engine was not powerful. The yacht was capable of two knots, and the vessel had proved seaworthy.
