SUN UP AND MOON DOWN

SPLENDID VIEW ON SUMMIT.

MANY CLIMBERS ON MOUNTAIN.

Over 70 persons visited the crater from the northern side of Mount Egmont yesterday. “The weather was splendid and it was one of the'best days for climbers -this summer,” said Mr. H. Nodder, of the North Egmont hostel, last night. A party of 29 was at the summit to watch the sun rise. Fourteen of these, under the leadership of Mr. Rigby Allan, stayed at the Kahui hut on Saturday night and departed .for the top early yesterday morning. Another party of 13 in charge of Mr. S, Arthur left the hostel at 12.45 a.m., while two young men set out at 10 o’clock with the intention of spending the night on the summit. They did not do so, however, but slept under the lip of the crater and joined Mr. Arthur’s party in the morning. There were no. clouds and the view from the summit was reported to be superb. Hie rising of the sun synchronised with the setting of the moon and several of the observers said they would never, forget the heavenly splendour. From 7 o’clock to 9.30 yesterday parties left the north hostel for the top at brief intervals. One man. said there were easily 40 persons on the summit at one period of the morning, and others went up later in the day. Mr. W. H. Woodward, S.M., was a member of a party taken to the hostel by Mr. Norman Gibson, Kaimiro.
