FAREWELL TO MAGISTRATE
COURT STAFF AND POLICE FORCE
RETIREMENT OF MR. R. W. TATE.
Mr. R. W. Tate, S.M., who is to hold his last sitting to-morrow prior to his retirement from the magisterial bench, was presented with a case of pipes and a tobacco pouch by members of the courthouse staff and. the police department at New Plymouth . afternoon. The gathering took place in the courthouse, and besides members of the court staff there were present Mr. S. Rawle, inspector of police, arid other representatives of the force. In the absence' of Mr. H. Gilmore Smith, registrar of the Supreme Court, the presentation was. made by Mr. S. F. Collier, deputy-regis-trar. He referred appreciatively to Mr. Tate’s fine Qualities as a chief. Mr. Tate, he said, always treated members of the staff with forbearance and courtesy and had always been ready to give, them his advice and assistance. He was always readily approachable and the staff would miss a chief who was so easy to get on with. ~ , Mr. Rawle said Mr. Tate would be remembered: by members of, the police force for. The happy relations that had existed between . the magistrate and them. Mr. Rawle endorsed Mr. Collier’s tribute'to Mr. Tate for his gentlemanly courtesy. ' In reply Mr. Tate said the fact that such happy relations had existed between him and the staff was due to the members of the staff themselves. He considered the New Plymouth office was fortunate in having such a 'fine staff. Referring to his association with ffie police of New Plymouth and, Taranaki, Mr. Tate as--a whole was exceedingly fortunate in having, such a fine body of men as guardians of the law. Mr. H. Gilmore Smith, who. is on holiday, telegraphed his regret at. his absence from the'gathering and referred appreciatively to the friendly relations that had existed between the magistrate and all the members of the court staff. Mr. Smith associated himself with the others in, wishing Mr. Tate a long and happy retirement.
