JUSTICES OF THE PEACE
REVIEW OF PAST YEAR'S WORK. THE TARANAKI ASSOCIATION. The tenth annual report of the Taranaki Justices of the Peace Association states that the number of members is now 103. Mention is made of the deaths of the following members during the year: A. Cassie, New Plymouth; P. Darke, Okoke; J. W. H. Fredrlc, Stratford; A. Lees, Okaiawa; E. Martell, Stratford; J. Masters, Stratford; A. McKeown, Pihama; J. L. Perry, New Plymouth; E. Walter, Douglas. Three social evenings were held, two at New Plymouth and one at Stratford, and at each of them the attendance was very good. At the meetings in New Plymouth addresses were given by Mr. Dineen on the probationary system .of punishment, and by Mr. H. R. Billing on the administration of justice in the English law courts, while at Stratford Mr. W. H. Skinner gave an address on the early history of the Stratford district, dealing especially with the Maori traditions. In September, Mr. W. J. Chaney left New Plymouth to live at Auckland, and it was decided at the following meeting of the association that in recognition of his services, in founding the association, and as honorary registrar,. he should be elected a life member.
It is proposed to hold the next conference of the federation at Invercargill in March, but suggestions have been made that it may not be advisable to hold it until 1934.
