TRENTHAM COURSE DEAD

WIN AND PLACE BETS POPULAR.* SEATOWS SURPRISING LATE RUN t (By Wire-Special to News.) Wellington, Last Night, The course was dead for the final day of the Wellington meeting, which attracted a large Anniversary Day crowd. The win and place betting proved popular and £43,676 went through the machines. Chief Line Wins Easily. In the Highweight Nightguard and Saltpot led the way in the run to the straight with Palace, Jayson and Grand Blow following.-. Saltpot stopped quickly after turning for home and Nightguard was soon under pressure. A furlong from home Chief Line moved up on the outside and won easily by a length from Golden Horn. Nightguard was a couple of lengths away third and Clangor fourth, followed by King Thomond arid Palace. The winner has improved as the meeting has . progressed and to-day won as he liked. Navaho’s Improvement, From a good start in the Kelbum Handicap Courtyard quickly worked to the front and led from Bee Acre and Zeebrugge, while Navaho, who had not got ’ away well, moved into a • prominent position. Zeebrugge was slightly in advance, of the others coming into the straight, where Tippling, Courtyard, Azalea, Importance and Lyrical were prominent. Zeebrugge was in trouble at the distance and Navaho soon ran to the front but Chief Light outstayed him and won by half a length. Zeebrugge, a length away, just got third place from Lyrical. Tippling was a poor fifth. The riders of several of the leaders made their runs too soon. Navaho ran a great race and has steadily improved of late. Zeebrugge seems sure to win a race soon. Red Manfred Comfortably. Pegged Exchange and Quietly caused a long "delay at the start of the Hopeful Stakes. Dole began very smartly and led on to the course proper from Golden Hair, Porotiti, Pegged • Exchange and Red Manfred, Red Manfred ran up

to Dole at the distance and beat him comfortably by a length and a-half. Dole just beat Golden Hair for second place and Pegged Exchange was fourth. South Island Success. Another good race went to the South Island when the Melrose Handicap came *up for decision. Kemal Pasha was taken to the front before reaching the straight and led round the home turn from Eupator and Tea Garden. Nebulae and Broken Rule were at the head of the others. Kemal Pasha had a decisive win. Chile finished fast to beat Eupator by a head for, second, but was four lengths behind Kemal Pasha. Niggerhead was a poor fourth and then came Nebulae, Cardinal Moon and Tea Garden. Nebulae ran a fair race and stuck on gamely when beaten. Kemal Pasha outclossed the opposition all the way. Chile is improving and may win soon. Biggest Surprise of Meeting. The Summer Handicap produced the biggest surprise of the meeting. Seatown lost ground at the start but the rest went away in a fair line. Gay Crest, Refresher and Great Star led out of the straight and at the mile were in front from Merry Peel, Atholspear, Chock Say, Red Heckle, Princess Argosy and Seatown. Princess Argosy ran to the front when the race was half over and she led to the straight from Great Star, Merry Peel, Refresher and Red Heckle. Princess Argosy compounded quickly and Great Star was in trouble at the distance, where Red Heckle was in front. Red Heckle battled on well but Seatown came with a late run to beat him by half a neck. Shatter was half a length away third and Gay Crest fourth. Then came Refresher and Great Star. Seatown finished with a characteristic run and received an ovation. Refresher was always in the picture and finished a fair fifth. Shatter is returning to form and there was nothing wrong with Gay Crest’s running. Aiguille Just Beaten. Aiguille went close to opening his account in open company with a win but was beaten at the post. There was another long delay at the start. Positions changed rapidly in the run along the back and crossing the top Drum Fire was in charge from Rational 11., Hula Belle, Martian Chief, Aiguille,

and Eminent Aiguille did best of these in the run home but succumbed to Mil ladi’s late effort. Eminent was in the fight all the way along the straight but weakened a little at the erid and ■ finished third three lengths away. Gay Court was fourth, with Martian Chief, Argentic and Wise Choice next. Awaken again ran poorly and Richfield and Glenvane were left badly at the start. Ranelagh had a poor run. Drum Fire was made a lot of use of. Eminent failed only in the last half furlong. There was an inquiry into alleged interference to Eminent by Aiguille but no action was taken. Lordly Knight’s Great Finish. Souchong and Golden Wings led on to the course proper in the City Handicap from Arvada and Lordly Knight, and in a great finish Lordly Knight won by half a head from Pomp, while Cricket Bat and Souchong were close up in third and fourth places. Golden Wings and Orapai were next at the head of a closely packed bunch. The Tiger did not get away very well but Arvada had every chance. Orapai ran below expectations.
