BOWLERS IN ACTION

TARANAKI TOURNAMENT FIFTY-SIX TEAMS TAKE PART. SEVEN SO FAR UNDEFEATED. . SEVERAL VERY CLOSE CONTESTS. Fifty-six teams from most parts of Taranaki and from Waverley, Wanganui, Terrace End, Cambridge, Te Aroha and Thames, are competing in the twentyeighth annual tournament which opened yesterday under the auspices of the Taranaki Bowling Centre. The tournament promises to be as successful as any of its predecessors, whilst from the standard of play yesterday some great bowls should be witnessed before the champions are found. The teams have been divided into five sections, two of ten teams and three of twelve, and play is taking place on the Paritutu, West End, Vogeltown, New Plymouth and Fitzroy greens, all of which are in splendid order. Following the rain of the previous day some of the greens were slightly dead early in the day, but with the strong south-east wind, which made matters somewhat difficult at times, they soon became keen. This year three games of 21 heads are being played daily for three days, and winners of seven games or more, as well as section winners with fewer than seven wins,, will enter post-section play, which will be on the two-life system. Yesterday only seven teams came through undefeated —Terrace End (skipped by J. O’Shea, formerly of Taranaki and Wanganui), three West End teams, Eltham and Fitzroy. Many of the games were keenly contested, the issue being in doubt till the last bowl was sent down. In several an extra head was required. EARLY BIG LEADS. At the Paritutu green in the first round F. Spurdie (Inglewood) started with a run against A. K. Smart (New Plymouth) to lead 12-3 on the eighth head.. Smart scored a five on the next head and went on to score a further eleven while Spurdie added only three, and Smart led 19-15 on the 18th head. With a four on the next and a single on the penultimate head Spurdie took the lead again, but Smart evened with a single, and in the final head drew a beautiful shot to win after Spurdie had put the kitty in the ditch. Evans (Vogeltown) also ran away to lead Sheehy (West. - End) 16-4, but Sheehy then moved away and took a six on the 16th head, the score being even at 16 all. After the 20th head Evans was leading 20-17, but Sheehy then lay three, evening up and necessitating an extra head. When Evans went down to deliver the last bowl he was three down, but he drew a beautiful shot on a long head to win by a point. Julian (Pihama) led Harris (Stratford) 15-7 on the 12th head, but the Stratford skip scored on the next six heads to lead 18-15. Julian then came again over the last three heads, clinching the position with a three on the final head to win 20-18.

After being down 6-1 on the first four heads T. Corkill (Hawera) drew away to win comfortably from J. Somerton (Fitzroy) by 8 points. ’ Goldstone (Wanganui) led T. C. Fookes (New Plymouth) 17-2 on the Sth head. The New Plymouth skip thereafter more than held his own, reducing the margin to two on the 18th head, to be finally beaten by 6 points. Each of the second round games was won by a fair margin, but in the third round Somerton scored two on the last head to win by that margin from Spurdle. A. Smart and Goldstone (Wanganui) were running level (14-all) at the 18th. head, but. the Wanganui skip scored on the next three heads to win 18-14. CLOSE CONTESTS. In the first round there were some very close contests, three matches being won by a point and one requiring an extra head. That was the match between Williams (Fitzroy) and Bartlett (Awakino). On the 9th head Fitzroy was leading 15-3. Bartlett added eight on the three heads and lost one on the 13th. He drew away in the next four heads to lead 19-16. Williams scored two singles. The 20th head resulted in a tie. Williams evened on the final head and on the extra head gained the winning point. In the match between Davis (Stratford) and Pohe Tito (Pihama) the latter had scored 16 to his opponent’s five at the 12th head. Davis added five on the next head and went on to add, eight more and take the lead 18-16 on the 17th head. Tito was only able to reduce the margin by one. Higgs (New Plymouth) ! was leading O’Shea (Terrace End) 12-11 on the 12th head, but the visiting skip scored on the next six heads to, lead 20-12. Higgs came with a burst over the final three heads to add 2, 1 and 4, but he failed by one to reach his opponent. The game between Pohe Tito and Williams (Fitzroy) in the second round was very interesting. On the 11th head the teams were equal (13-all). A couple of threes to the Pihama skip saw him lead 21-16 on the 17th head. Williams then added a four and two brace to have a 3-point lead when the mat was laid for the final head. Tito scored two to be beaten by one point. G. Sole (West End) won his first two matches comfortably, defeating E. Jackson (Paritutu) by seven points and J. Buchan (Te Aroha) by nine after being five down on the 17th head. Sole added a five and a seven on successive heads. His opponent then scored a single, while Sole in the last head added three. The match between Smith (Park) and Ewing (Stratford) was interesting. Smith did not score at all on the first five heads, during which Ewing put on eight. Ewing held the lead to 16-12 at the 17th head, but thereafter did not score, while Smith with three singles followed by a two on the final head notched a point victory. A five on the fifth head was Lobb’s first score against Murray (Fitzroy). Fortunes fluctuated to the 15th head, when the scores were 14-all, but on the next five heads Lobb added eight while Murray stood still, so the final head was not played. Wallis (Paritutu) ran away from Wenham (Feilding) to lead 18-5 on. the 11th head, but thereafter the Feilding skip more than held his own, being defeated by only four points. Boulton (Cambridge) was always well in front of Skoglund (Stratford), the latter scoring a four and a five on the 20th and final heads to reduce the lead to six.

Nosworthy (Waitara) comfortably defeated Horton (New Plymouth). Weston (rLvon) similarly beat Stewart (Eltham). Lobb started strongly against Boulton (Cambridge) to lead 15-5 on the 11th head. On the next head Boulton scored six. He gradually made up the leeway and with a four on the 19th head equalled the scores at 18-all. Lobb lay four on the penultimate head, the Cambridge skip being able to reduce the . gap by only two on the final head.

The match between Wallis (Paritutu) and S. Ewing (Stratford) was a hard struggle to the 16th head, where Wallis put in three to lead 19-17. Thereafter Ewing added 15 in four heads, including a six on the 20th, making it unnecessary to play, the final head. _ ft

In the first round at the Fitzroy green Cottier (Inglewood) looked an easy winner when he led 22-13 at the 18th head, but with a 4, a single and a 3 Amess (Stratford) just failed by a point to even.

With a deficit of two against Mason (Park), Harrison (Eltham) lay five cn the last head to win •by three. When Blackie (Eltham) scored 4 on the 16th head to lead Green (St. Johns) by 22-13 the game looked all over, but thereafter he never moved while his opponent, defying the popular superstition, scored 12 on the next five heads to win 25-22.

At the West End green Wicks (Waverley) started well against a strong West End rink skipped by Beal and at', the 6th head led 9-1. Scoring six at the 11th head ,Beal was able to level at 12-all at the 12th head, and a three at the 16th head saw West End lead 17-14. Beal scored only one in the next five heads' while his opponent added four singles to be level at the close of the 21st head. Beal notched a single on the extra head. Boulton (West End) and Healy (Vogeltown) played a neck and neck game, the score being 15-14 in West End’s favour on the 17th head. Boulton added six on the next head and it proved sufficient to give him a tvin by 2 points, though Healy lay four on the final head. Jury (Fitzroy) and Dickinson (Avon) kept close together, the score reading 14-all on the 19th head. Jury scored three on the 20th head to win by two. After being down 7-1 on the sth head, McLeod (New Plymouth) drew away to defeat Wilson (Opunake) 28-17. Abbott (Fitzroy) overwhelmed the Thames team; which scored on only five heads.

After being two down on the 10th head, Casey added eight on the next three heads and that was sufficient tq give him a three-point win over Townsley (Hawera). The second round match between J. Abbott and A. O. Casey proved a great contest. They were 9-all at the 11th head, and Abbott drew away to lead 17-12 on the 19th head. Casey added a two on the penultimate head and then with a beautiful bowl just shifted an opponent’s bowl to lay four and win by one point. After leading Adamson (Thames) by 14 to 2 on the 11th head, Wicks (Waverley) just managed to score the winning shot on the last head. The third round saw Jury and Boulton continue their winning careers by defeating Healy (Vogeltown) and Wicks respectively. Scoring two on the last head, Townsley (Hawera) gained his first victory by a point and incidentally gave Beal his first loss. J. McLeod sustained his first loss also when Abbott beat him. comfortably. Casey also suffered his first defeat by Wilson, who won on the last head bn a measure after a very even game, there never being much between the teams. Incidentally it was Wilson’s first win.
