THEFT BY POSTMASTER

THREE YEARS’ PROBATION. DEPARTURE FROM THE RULE. By Telegraph.—Press Association. Dunedin, Nov. 22. In the Supreme Court Mr. Justice Kennedy admitted Gordon Campbell, expostmaster at North Dunedin, to three years’ probation for the theft of £79. The Judge took the view that but for the unfortunate state of accused’s health he would not be in his present position, and thought the case was sufficiently unusual in the circumstances to justify him in the case of a civil servant in departing from the ordinary rule of imposing imprisonment. Counsel stated that restitution had been made.
