WAITARA BEACH SOCIETY

MAINTENANCE OF RESERVE. SALVATION ARMY LECTURE. Matters connected with the maintenance of the kiosk and reserve were discussed by the committee of the Waitara Beach Improvement . and Surf-bathing Society at the monthly meeting on Monday night. There were present Mr. 1. Taylor (chairman), Mesdames W. Trim, L. Clare, J. Canton, F. Lock -e and W. Ferguson, Messrs. W- Nosworthy, J. W. Hamlin, .L. Clare, A. Rawles, B Dew, E. Lash and J. Hughson (secretaiy). Mr. Nosworthy, the past president, welcomed Mr. Taylor to the meeting and congratulated him on his election as president of the society. Mr. Taylor said he would do his best in the interests of the society. . Applicants for the position of caretaker were discussed and Mr. H. Ewens was selected. Mr. Hughson, who has been managing the kiosk for the society since it was vacated by the last attendant, reported that a few small repairs were needed. Mr. Clare was authorised to attend to the repairs. Mr. Hughson pointed out that a hose was needed for washing tne bathing sheds and watering the lawn around the kiosk. It was decided to procure a hose. The secretary and Mr. L. Clare were empowered to procure a ladder, two taps and some wire netting to be ’used in bathing sheds. It was reported that the dance held to secure funds to make a tennis court at the beach was successful, £5 being obtained. SALVATION ARMY VISIT. The work of the Salvation Army in the Dutch East Indies was the subject of an interesting lecture at St. John s Hall by Commissioner J. Cunningham, head of the Salvation Army in New Zealand, on Monday night. .. , The Mayor, Mr. J. Hine, introduced Commissioner Cunningham. The commissioner then introduced the other members of his party, Brigadiers Cotterill and A. Scotney, Major Perry and Mrs. Perry, Mrs. Cunningham, and the two local officers, Captain Mayfield and Lieutenant Ramsby. The Salvation Army boys band from Eltham, under the baton of Major Perry, accompanied the opening hymn and later played two selections.. Commissioner Cunningham spoke of the mission work of the Army m the Dutch East Indies, and pointed out that since the Army had been working theie the conditions had wonderfully improved in the physical, mental and moral aspects of the inhabitants. The commissioner made an appeal to the public to assist the Army. The Waitara cricket team to play Stratford at Waitara on Thursday will bo chosen from W. Lobban, J." Priar, M.
