MATAU W.D.F.U. BALL.

PRIZES FOR FANCY DRESS. The Matau branch of the Women’s Division of the Farmers’ Union held a very successful fancy dress ball on Friday. Visitors were present from Stratford, Pukeho, Purangi, Tarata, Ngatamarau and Huiroa. The costumes struck a gay note against the greenery of the decorations, and the judges, Mrs. McCrae and Miss Cornyns, Stratford, had a difficult task in separating the winners. The prizewinners were Miss U. Webb (best fancy dress), Miss D. Rawlinson (best paper costume), Miss G. Chapman (most original costume). Those in fancy dress were: Mesdames P. Rolfe, Taranaki Daily Nevzs, S. Edgecombe, Chinese Lady; A. Smith, Peasant Girl; E. McCoard, Bed Tea; Misses D. Rawlinson, Ruffles; G. Chapman, Minties; U. Webb, Turkish Lady; N. Smaill, Balloon Seller; M. Smellie, Hawaiian Girl; G. Mundy, Naval Cadet; P. Johnson, Buttercup; N. Mundy, Pantaloons. After the judging a very enjoyable dance was held. Amongst those present were Mesdames P. Rolfe, blue and white marocain, W. McCoard, floral crepe silk; Ayers, green crepe de chine; G. Rawlinson, figured marocain; J. Mackie, brown frock; McCrae, black satin relieved with gold; W. Rawlinson, red celanese; Webb, brown figured marocain; H. Chapman, black and white frock; A. Rolfe, black satin; Moody, floral marocain; E. McCoard, floral silk; T. Chapman, grey frock; G. Edgecombe, black celanese; Rosewarne, floral frock; Adams, grey frock; Smith, blue spun silk; Misses Rogers, green crepe de chine; Ennis, white satin and net relieved with blue; Ritter, blue with tulle flounce; Mischefski, black and pink frock; Johnson, beige rayon relieved with green; G. Chapman, black lace; E. Coulter, pink lace and net; D. Rawlinson, yellow celanese; Cornyns, black satin; M. Larsen, pink celanese; Smaill, floral satin; Goodwin, green crepe de chine; U. Webb, pink celanese; P. Lambert, red frock; G. Mundy, pink rayon; Woolridge, black satin relieved with silver; Askew, blue frock; K. Lambert, floral rayon; Knox, blue celanese; Coulter, pink net and velvet. During the evening Mrs. McCrae sang several songs which were heartily encored, as also was a duet sung by Mrs. McCrae and Miss Cornyns. A competition for a fat turkey was won by Mr. H. Patterson, Tarata.
