FINAL PING PONG TOURNEY. The final of a series of ping pong tournaments was held at Meremere on Friday evening. Mrs. D. Gardner (scr) beat Mrs. J. Bloor (scr) by 21 to 17 for the ladies’ prize and W. Geary (owe 1) beat M. Murray (scr) by 21 to 19 in the men’s finals. The ladies’ guild held its fortnightly meeting at Mrs. G. Williams’ residence. At a meeting of Meremere ladies ;1 was decided to Hold the Christmas tree function on December 14. HURLEYVILLE NEWS. PERSONAL AND GENERAL ITEMS. News was received by Mrs. Haydon on Thursday morning of the death of her son, Mr. E. J. Haydon. Mr. Haydon for many years resided at Waipori Falls, Dunedin. Mrs. Fullarton, Hurleyville and Mrs. Elliot, Nelson, are sisters. Mr. Lewis Goodson, while engaged in breaking a young horse, was heavily thrown. He suffered concussion and a broken arm. He is in the Patea hospital. Mrs. Hamilton Stratford, visited Hurteyville recently and was the guest of Mrs. Fullarton.

Walters, Wellington, addressed pupils of the Whakamara school on Monday morning on the jubilee. Mr. Walters taught at Whakamara 30 years ago. Mr. H. M. Caselberg has been appointed manager of the Hawera branch of the Farmers’ Co-operative Society. , GENERAL ITEMS. At the quarterly meeting of the Hawera Druids Lodge the following members were elected to the positions mentioned: Grand Lodge delegate, P.D.P. Bro. W. Adams; member of Friendly Societies’ Dispensary Board, D.P. Bro. N. • Grant; delegate to the Friendly Societies Hospital Council, P.D.P. Bro. J. W. Harding; pianist, Bro. L. Billows. ADVERTISERS’ ANNOUNCEMENTS. Particulars are advertised of a ball to be held in the Mokoia Hall on Wednesday, December 7. Smith and Trim Ltd., Hawera, advertise a sale of 50 one-year laying hens on account of Mr. Geo. Gaylard and household furniture and effects on account of a deceased person’s estate, which they will hold to-morrow at 1.30 p.m. in the Central Mart.

An outstanding event in the school year will be held in the Main School grounds, South Road, Hawera, to-day when the gala day will commence at 2 p.m. The comprehensive programme arranged includes rhythmic drills and dancing, folk dancing and novelty events. A dance will be held at the Matapu Hall this evening. Buses will leave Okaiawa and Eltham. Good music, a good floor and a good supper will ensure an enjoyable evening. The Okaiawa Presbyterian Church flower show will be held in the Okaiawa Town Hall this afternoon and evening. There will be numerous stalls, and various competitions will be held.

The Auroa Tennis Club will hold a fancy dress and masquerade ball on Boxing night. Full particulars will be advertised later.

HAWERA ORCHESTRAL CONCERT.

TO-MORROW AT OPERA HOUSE.

The Hawera Orchestral Society has arranged for the final concert of the season to-morrow'night in the Opera House, a programme that should mark the concert as one of the best ever given in the history of the society. The orchestral items will be varied and interesting and will include numbers from the works of Mendelssohn, Elgar, Liszt and Gung’l. Miss Christine Ormiston, the soprano who has made herself a great favourite with Wellington audiences, will sing “The Jewel Song” (Faust), “Songs My Mother Taught Me (Dvorak) and “Life and Death" (Coleridge Taylor). Mr. Harold Ackroyd will be heard in “Eri Tu” (from Verdi’s “Un Ballo e Maschero”) and the “Prologue” from Pagliacci. The third assisting soloist will be Master Louis Fox, a young violinist vzho has gained successes in several competitions in the North Island and is well and favourably known at Hawera. He will play the exceedingly difficult “Devil’s Sonata,” by Tartini, recognised as a severe test for a violinist. Seats may be booked at Miss Blake’s shop at the Opera House.
