JUBILEE OF ST. MARY’S

CELEBATIONS CONTINUED. e - CHILDREN’S SPECIAL SERVICE. Services and functions in connection with the jubilee of St. Mary’s, Hawera, were continued yesterday. In the afternoon the children had their share of the celebrations and last night the choir presented the oratorio, s ‘4‘2nd Psalm.” Over 200 children took part in the celebrations arranged for the Sunday school puoils, the occasion being marked by a special service followed by a tea .party in-the parish hall. _ , The children were assembled in the church ground at 3.30 p.m. and led in procession by Mr. A. E. Morris and the choir boys, followed by the Dominion flag borne by the Hawera company, of Girl Guides. After circling the church twice the children joined hands round the church and wished it "many happy returns.” A short service appropriate to the occasion was then conducted by the vicar, 1 the Rev. H. Whitby James. The parish hall, which a ladies’ committee had decorated in soft shades of pink and blue, "was just large enough to accommodate the party. Pride of place on the stage was given to the large iced birthday cake decorated with fifty gaily coloured candles. Thes® were lighted by Mrs. Steele and Miss Briggs and blown out by the vicar and Mr. Oppenheim. Mrs. Steele _ cut ’ t}ie cake with a very efficient looking cwopd. Each child received a- bag. of sweets, and hearty cheers were given for ' the vicar and the committee, Mesdames Steele, Nicholas, Campbell, Syme and Allen, Misses Chadwick, Death, Exley, Harley and Scott and Mr. Oppepheim. The choir , last night was under, the direction of Mr. Herbert Webb and gave a fine interpretation of Mendelssohn’s oratorio “42nd Psalm.” A sermon was preached by. the Ven. J. R- Young, Archdeacon' of Waitotara, until recently, vicar of St. Mary’s. . The preacher on Monday night was the Ven. A. L. Hansell, Archdeacon of Wairarapa, -who was assistant curate at Hawera in 1899. The choir sang the anthem, “Comes at times ’a Stillness.” Mr. R. F. Page, a former choirmaster, was at ‘ the organ by invitation of Mr. Webb. To-day old parishioners will be 'honoured. There will be a Communion service'at 7 a.m. At 11 a.m. there will be a service for. old parochial identities followed by a reunion luncheon. In the evening a parish social will be held.

HAWERA SWIMMING CLUB.

CLUB NIGHTS FOR MEMBERS ONLY.

A decision that only honorary and active members will be admitted to its club nights has been made by the Hawera Swimming Club. This has been suggested before but has not been put into operation. Mr. A. J. Ryan has been appointed handicapper and Mr. D. C. Ryan starter. ■ The club will open its activities next week. PERSONAL. The “funeral of Miss C. E. Davis, sister of Miss A. G... Davis and the late Mrs. H. S. Elliott, who died at Hawera oh Sunday, took place yesterday. Services were conducted at the house and the ’graveside by the Rev. H. Whitby James., There were many beautiful floral tributes. GENERAL ITEMS. Good progress with the preliminary arrangements was reported to a general meeting of the recently formed Turuturu Tennis Club oh Tuesday, evening. Mr. A. Gillon presided. Mr. A. Reid was elected club captain, and several new members were elected. It • was decided to affiliate with the Taranaki Lawn Tennis Association.

A large crowd greeted the Maori choir at the Auroa hall on Tuesday evening, when there was great enthusiasm. The musical’and elocutionary numbers were superb, the instrumentalists, being experts in handling their ukuleles, etc., seemed to be able to do as they liked with them. The Rev. J. Seamer was not able to be present himself, being called back to Auckland, but Sister Ropeta performed the duties in admirable spirit and with exceptional ability. The event was a conspicuous success from every point of view and will be long remembered.

'Good Night, Vienna,” will be shown at the Hawera Opera House, to-day, to-night and tomorrow night.
