STRATFORD PETROL STATION.

(To the Editor.)

Sir,—-There is a good prospect _ of having a new business venture established in Stratford, namely, a distributing centre for petrol for the- district extending from Wanganui to Awakino. - This would niean quite an important industry employing numerous hands.. It would certainly be a considerable advantage to the town. . - ■

Objection lias been raised by some people to tflie site chosen on various grounds—-(1) That it is desirable to retain the proposed site for -beautification purposes at some future period; (-2) that some danger will be. created to school children; (3) that the sport of fishing might be hampered. The riverside from Brecon Road to Broadway is already reserved and beautified, and constitutes a generous reserve for this purpose. Moreover, the petrol store would not preclude beaaitifying the river bank. The danger to school children would be negligible because the additional traffic would be confined, to an occasional bulk petrol lorry passing along the street. The question of preserving fishing at tlie cost of driving business from -the town will solve itself in the minds of most reasonable people. Pollution will not occur. It is absurd to suggest that the company would thus waste.valuable petrol. . I consider it to be my duty to warn the public of Stratford that agitation against the proposed.new venture will probably result in the establishment of the distributing centre in another town. It will then be too late to deplore lost opportunities of advancing -Stratford.— I am, etc., J. B. RICHARDS. President, Stratford Ohafnber of Commerce.
