Canberra, Nov. 8.
A special Gazette issued yesterday-an-nounced the prohibition of the export of bananas from Norfolk Island. Mr. C. W. C. Marr, Minister of Health, explained that there was an arrangement whereby the Islanders exported 1500 cases of bananas to New Zealand every six weeks. Yesterday, being the export day, one grower attempted to steal a march on his fellow exporters by hurriedly placing aboard the vessel the full consignment of 1500 cases belonging to himself and a few friends. The other growers, who were left with their fruit, were compelled to seek the aid of the Federal Government, which immediately, promulgated the prohibition order. Mr. Marr added that the ship’s cap c tain immediately set about unloading the bananas in order to escape demurrage charges.
