MATAU DISTRICT NEWS

JUNCTION ROAD METALLING. The monthly meeting of _ the Matau branch of the Women’s Division of the Farmers’ Union was held in the hall last Wednesday. The weather was very inclement. Matters in connection with the fancy dress ball to be held during the month were finalised- After the meeting a sale of goods from the Jubilee Institute for the Blind' was held. Numbers of the articles were sold and orders taken for more. The articles for sale consisted mainly of well-made cane baskets, prams,, chairs and stools. A well attended meeting . of ratepayers convened by the Ngatimaru riding member (Mr. G. H. Rawlinson) took place in the Matau hall on Thursday night. It was decided, to act in conjunction with other districts adjoin ing and served by Junction Road, -n sending a signed petition by a deputation to the Minister of Public Works to have the stretch of unmetalled Junction Road finished by relief labour, and to have a metal pit on Mangamaire Road opened and worked by the unemShearing operations have commenced in the district but the unsettled weather .is proving a decided drawback to those farmers who have to bring their sheep long distances to the sheds.

VISITORS’ APPRECIATION.

ENJOYED TRIP TO MOUNTAIN.

Since the ceremony of opening the road to the Stratford Plateau on Mt. Eo-mont, Mr. J. C. Robins (chairman of the East Committee of the Egmont National Park Board) has been the recipient of numerous congratulatory messages and letters of appreciation from those who attended. One visitor wrote: “Allow me to express my thanks for the kindness and courtesy shown to me and to compliment you and your committee upon the successful way in which the celebration proceedings passed off. I know from conversations I had with Parliamentarians afterwards that they regarded the trip to ■ the mountain as a fit capping to a wonderful day’s experience. This particular visitor enclosed , a cheque for £3 3s for the committee to use as it saw fit.

TENNIS AT STRATFORD.

WAITARA TEAM TO PAY VISIT.

A combined. Waitara tennis team will visit Stratford this afternoon to' play a friendly match. The team is Messrs. Middleton, Pryke, Thomas, Stead, A. Foreman, Brimilow, Miss Gorrie, Mrs. Middleton, Mrs. Kent, Misses Foreman, Muschamp! and Mqdsen. The following tennis players will represent Stratford against' Waitara today: C. Ennis, W. Hale, T. Boylq, E. Ga.w, C. Harris, R. Sharrock, Mrs. Knewstubb, Miss Best,. Mrs. Home, Mrs. Ennis, Miss Keightley, Miss McCluggage. GENERAL ITEMS. ! The Californian redwoods and Oregon pines planted in the reserve lying, along the south ‘ side of Pembroke Road from Barclay Road to the national park aremaking excellent headway, only a very few having failed to strike.. , ' A bowling match has been arranged with the Eltham club at Eltham for the residue of the Stratford Bowling Club not otherwise engaged in shield matches. Stratford teams for this match .are: Watkins, Berman, Porritt, Lyons (e); Curtis, Sullivan, Galbraith, S. Ewing (s); Young, Sayers, Green, Coe (s); Clemow, Sutton, J. Butcher, T. T. Skoglund (s); Ryan, D. Butcher, Thompson, Davis (s). A meeting of the executive of the Stratford A. and P. Association. .on Tuesday night, Mr. A. David presiding, decided to hold the national dancing competitions on the second day of the show only. Arrangements .were reported to be proceeding satisfactorily. New members elected were Messrs. C. Gable, C. H. Whittington, B. Kidd, E. H. Harris and A. ,H. Gilbert (New Plymouth). ■,

ADVERTISERS’ ANNOUNCEMENTS.

A reminder is given that entries for all classes of the Stratford A and P. show close definitely at 9 o clock tonight with the secretary, Mr. W. F. Ross. Entries have been coming m well and it is assured that' the show will be one of the most successful yet held.

A complimentary dance and euchre (to the ladies’ social committee) of the Tariki Hockey Club, is to be held in the Tariki hall to-night- (Thursday). An excellent dance band will be in attendance. There will be novelty dances and Monte Carlos, good euchre prizes and a real TC.yal time, for all.
